A road race through the Art Nouveau historic center of Canicattini Bagni
The Canicattini Bagni Liberty and Music Road Race Trophy is the premier running event in the municipality of Canicattini Bagni, located in the province of Syracuse, in southeastern Sicily. The race winds through the historic center, turning the town into an urban circuit where hundreds of runners compete. Promoted by APD Placeolum, a FIDAL-affiliated club, in partnership with the local administration and the Sports Department, the race has become a staple event that marks the beginning of the town's summer season.
The track runs entirely through the historic center on a circuit repeated multiple times. The main categories cover a distance of approximately 8.4 km over six laps of the city loop, while shorter distances are provided for youth and senior master categories. The event is recognized as a stage of the Syracuse Provincial Road and Track Grand Prix, a circuit that awards points toward the individual seasonal rankings.
The race typically attracts over 250 athletes from across the province of Syracuse and other Sicilian provinces, with participation from the island's leading athletics clubs. Alongside the competitive race, the Trophy maintains a popular and inclusive spirit: every year, special awards are presented to local athletes, highlighting the deep bond between sport and the community.
Running through these streets means traversing one of Sicily's most unique towns. Canicattini Bagni is known as the City of Liberty (Art Nouveau). At the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to remittances from emigrants in the United States and a local evening school for design and architecture, a generation of local stonemasons and decorators adorned house facades with sinuous balconies, floral motifs, and stylized female figures. This resulted in a unique, grassroots Liberty style—distinct from that of larger cities—which provides a stunning backdrop for the race.
The reference to Music in the Trophy's title reflects the cultural vocation of Canicattini Bagni, which hosts a rich summer calendar featuring an international jazz festival and other events. The Road Race Trophy symbolically opens this season, blending sport, culture, and hospitality into one great town festival.
The fourth edition was held on Sunday, May 31, 2026, through the streets of Canicattini Bagni's historic center, with over 250 athletes from across the province of Syracuse and Sicily. The race, serving as the fifth stage of the 19th Provincial Grand Prix, featured an 8.4 km course over six laps of the city circuit for the main categories.
The men's race was won by Andrea Lo Nigro (Asd Megara Running) with a time of 29'56", ahead of Aldo Mariano Di Mari (30'03") and Alessandro Vizzini (30'24"). In the women's field, Corinne Caldarella (Asd Palombella Running) took victory in 24'44", while Venerando Tina (Asd Marathon Athletic Avola) won the 60-80 master category in 22'47". The event, organized by APD Placeolum with the Municipality, also included special awards for local athletes.
Canicattini Bagni is located in the Iblean hinterland, about 20 km from Syracuse. By car, it can be reached via the SS124 or the provincial roads connecting Syracuse and Floridia. The nearest train station is in Syracuse, from where you can continue by car or bus.
Participation in the competitive race is reserved for FIDAL-registered athletes and is handled through the organizing club, APD Placeolum. Public viewing along the course is free of charge.
Take advantage of the day to explore the Liberty-style historic center and its decorated facades. In summer, it is recommended to bring water and sun protection.
