The 18th-century Neapolitan Nativity comes to life in the ancient village of Campora
In Agerola, within the charming hamlet of Campora, Christmas comes to life in one of the oldest and most beloved living nativities in Campania. Nestled in the Lattari Mountains, just a stone's throw from the Amalfi Coast, the village transforms for several evenings into an authentic village of yesteryear: stone alleys, warm lights, and the scent of firewood and freshly prepared food guide visitors along a path that recreates the 18th-century Neapolitan-style Nativity.
The performance began in 1975 through the initiative of a parish priest and a group of young people from the Campora community, and it has been passed down from generation to generation to become an identity-defining event for the entire Municipality of Agerola. Now in its 37th edition, the event is managed by the San Martino Parish of Campora together with the Pro Loco and the local associations, involving hundreds of residents each year in a great collective effort.
The heart of the event lies in the over 300 costumed participants who animate the village. Along the route, one encounters blacksmiths at work with anvil and hammer, a carpenter shaping wood, a fishmonger, a chair-caner, cheesemakers working milk, shepherds with their animals, washerwomen, embroiderers, and the plowman.
The path is accompanied by local gastronomy, with a tasting menu that highlights regional products: montanare (fried dough), bruschetta with lard, pasta and potatoes with the famous Provolone del Monaco from the Lattari Mountains, sweet zeppole, freshly prepared fior di latte bocconcini, and local wine. It is an opportunity to discover the authentic flavors of Agerola, a land of excellent dairy products.
The Campora Living Nativity is one of the most anticipated events in the Christmas calendar of the Province of Naples and Campania. Between popular faith, rural memory, and warm hospitality, it offers residents and visitors an experience that blends spirituality, tradition, and landscape in the authentic heart of the Lattari Mountains.
The 37th edition confirmed the village of Campora, a hamlet of Agerola, as one of the most evocative living nativities on the Amalfi Coast. Over the five evenings — December 26 and 27, 2025, and January 2, 3, and 4, 2026 — over 300 costumed participants recreated the Nativity and the rural civilization of the Lattari Mountains.
Along the route, visitors encountered blacksmiths, cheesemakers, carpenters, shepherds, washerwomen, and embroiderers, as well as Nativity scenes and ancient taverns, with a tasting menu dedicated to local flavors.
Agerola can be reached by car from Castellammare di Stabia by following the road to Gragnano, Pimonte, and Agerola; from the Amalfi Coast, you arrive from Amalfi along the road to Bomerano. For the hamlet of Campora, a parking area is available in Via Mazzini, near the Municipal Cemetery, with a shuttle service.
The performance generally takes place from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Entry is by minimum donation; a path with a paid tasting menu is available. Reservations are recommended.
Comfortable footwear is recommended for the uneven sections of the village, and visitors are advised not to approach the animals along the route. Info and reservations via WhatsApp at +39 376 299 2651.
