Lake Varese, the European rowing capital
In 2026, Lake Varese returns to the centre of international rowing by hosting the European Championships on the Schiranna regatta course. This is not new for the city: the Schiranna has already hosted the Europeans in 2012 and 2021, as well as the Master World Championships in 2013, the Under 23 World Championships in 2014 and 2022, and numerous World Cup stages. A tradition that makes Varese one of the most reliable rowing venues in Europe.
Over 500 athletes from more than thirty nations are expected at the event, competing in the Senior, Lightweight, and Pararowing categories. The organisation is managed by the Italian Rowing Federation in collaboration with World Rowing.
The European Championships will not be confined to the waters of the Schiranna. The event will transform into a widespread celebration involving the entire city of Varese: in Piazza Repubblica, in the city centre, a rowing village will be set up with a giant screen to follow the races live. This is a way to bring the public into the competition and to tell the story of the deep bond between the city, its province, and this sport. For 2027, the Master World Championships are already scheduled, also at the Schiranna.
The 2026 European Rowing Championships will be held from July 30 to August 2 on the Schiranna regatta course, on Lake Varese. Over 500 athletes from more than 30 nations are expected, competing in the Senior, Lightweight, and Pararowing categories.
Alongside the races, the city will experience the event as a widespread celebration: a rowing village with a giant screen for live broadcasts will be set up in Piazza Repubblica. The European athletes competing in Varese will then rejoin the international events of the season, from the World Championships in Amsterdam to the Mediterranean Games in Taranto.
