The 4x4 gathering of the F.I.F. Campania Delegation on the slopes of Taburno, in Cautano
The Campania Off-Road Festival is the annual appointment where the Regional Delegation of the Italian Off-Road Federation (F.I.F.) calls upon crews, clubs, and off-road driving enthusiasts. For its third edition, the event chose the municipality of Cautano, in the Province of Benevento, in the hinterland of Campania: a small town in the Taburno area that transforms into the regional off-roading hub for an entire weekend.
The headquarters is the Il Tasso del Taburno Picnic Area, a well-equipped space immersed in greenery along the Provincial Road 120, featuring camping facilities, a dining area, and the vehicle departure point. The formula, as stated in the official presentation, is that of "a weekend dedicated to our passion, including nature, tourist trips, camping, and an excellent food area."
The 2026 edition took place on Saturday, June 6th, and Sunday, June 7th, with a schedule organized hour by hour:
In the F.I.F. national calendar, the Campania Off-Road Festival is classified as a "classic" gathering with a paper-based tourist route. This means that crews receive a paper road book and follow the itinerary without a stopwatch, special stages, or rankings: it is not a competition, but a tourist caravan traversing dirt roads and accessible trails, with the goal of discovering the territory at a leisurely pace.
Driving activities are reserved for F.I.F. members, as per the Federation's national gathering regulations, and online pre-registration via the federal portal is required. On-site registration opens at 12:00 PM and closes at 11:00 PM on the first day.
The gathering goes beyond just off-road tours. The picnic area hosts the crews' campsite, where they can stay overnight in tents or equipped vehicles, and a food area open throughout the event, featuring Saturday dinner, Sunday lunch, and the traditional midnight spaghetti. Inflatable play areas and games are set up for children, ensuring the event remains accessible to families and non-drivers.
The team games on Saturday evening and Sunday morning are the true social glue of the gathering: skill tests and group games that connect different clubs in a spirit that is more fun-loving than competitive.
Cautano is located in the Sannio hinterland, a short distance from Benevento, in a hilly landscape dominated by the Taburno-Camposauro massif, protected by the regional park of the same name. It is a territory of forests, pastures, and gravel roads—prime terrain for off-road and hiking enthusiasts: the choice to bring the regional festival here highlights this very vocation.
The Italian Off-Road Federation has been active in Italy for over forty years and structures its activities into regional delegations; the Campania branch organizes the event directly in collaboration with local clubs, including the local associations that drive the 4x4 calendar of the Province of Benevento.
The second edition was held on May 31st and June 1st, 2025, in Calitri, in the Province of Avellino, at the Contrada Vallicella fairgrounds, with free public access, off-road activities reserved for members, games and attractions for children, and a gastronomic pavilion. The move to the Sannio region for 2026 confirms the itinerant nature of the festival, designed to traverse the various provinces of Campania.
For 2026, the Campania Off-Road Festival left Irpinia for the Sannio region, choosing Cautano and the Il Tasso del Taburno picnic area as its logistical base. The gathering, classified by the Italian Off-Road Federation as a "classic" with a paper-based tourist route, offered two off-road outings—Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning—alternated with convivial moments in the food area and team games between crews.
The campsite set up in the equipped area allowed crews arriving from all over Campania to stay on-site, with the midnight spaghetti accompanied by rum and chocolate as the traditional closing of the first day. Driving activities remained reserved for F.I.F. members, with online pre-registration, while access to the area with the dining section and inflatables was also open to families at a cost of €5.00 per day.
Cautano can be reached by car from Benevento (about 20 km) via the SS 7 Appia and then the provincial roads of the Valle Vitulanese; from Naples and Caserta, take the A1 and the SS 7 towards Benevento. The Il Tasso del Taburno picnic area is located along the Provincial Road 120 in a hilly area: arriving by private vehicle is recommended, as public transport to the mountain area is limited.
Admission €5.00 per person per day; children up to 14 years old €3.00. Off-road driving activities are reserved for F.I.F. members with online pre-registration.
Bring shoes suitable for dirt paths, sunscreen, and camping equipment if you intend to stay on-site. For information: Danilo Cerchia 335 453343, Lauro Cairella 335 6929057, Pietro Pozzuto 347 3201008; F.I.F. secretariat [email protected].
