The provincial gathering of bell ringers from the Lucca area among the bell towers of Fosciandora
The Campanari Riuniti in Fosciandora gathering is one of the most evocative days dedicated to the art of bell ringing in the province of Lucca, Tuscany. Promoted by the Associazione Campanari Lucchesi, the event brings together bell-ringing groups from the Lucca area for a day of music, faith, and conviviality that spans the hamlets of the small municipality of Fosciandora, nestled in the Media Valle del Serchio at the foot of the Garfagnana.
Hand-ringing bells, according to the Lucca tradition, is an ancient art requiring precision, strength, and mutual listening. Since December 2024, this practice has been recognized by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, a milestone that has given new momentum to the bell ringers' initiatives. The Fosciandora gathering is the perfect opportunity to see and hear this tradition live, performed by ringers of all ages taking turns on the bell ropes.
The heart of the event lies in the performances that animate the four bell towers of the municipality of Fosciandora, located in the hamlets of La Villa, Migliano, Riana, and Treppignana. Various groups take turns throughout the morning and afternoon, making the valleys resonate with traditional peals and the characteristic melodies of the Lucca repertoire. The nerve center of the day is the hamlet of Migliano, with its meeting point in Piazza Luigi Roni.
In addition to the ringing, the program includes a Eucharistic celebration in the parish church of Migliano and a community lunch that brings together bell ringers, families, and visitors in the square. Participating groups receive commemorative gifts in a festive atmosphere of exchange between the various bell-ringing communities of the territory.
The gathering is part of the "2016-2026: 10 years together" cycle of initiatives, through which the Associazione Campanari Lucchesi celebrates the tenth anniversary of its founding in 2016, aimed at uniting surviving groups and training new ringers in the Archdiocese of Lucca. For visitors, attending this day means discovering one of the most authentic and deep-rooted expressions of popular culture in the province of Lucca, in a village of the Garfagnana where bells still mark the rhythm of community life.
The day opened at 9:30 AM with a meeting in Piazza Luigi Roni in Migliano, a hamlet of Fosciandora. At 10:00 AM, the first bell-ringing performances began, with groups making the bell towers of the hamlets of La Villa, Migliano, Riana, and Treppignana resonate.
At 11:00 AM, the Eucharistic celebration was held in the parish church of Migliano. Following this, at 1:00 PM, the community lunch took place in Piazza Luigi Roni, during which commemorative gifts were presented to the participating bell-ringing groups. In the afternoon, the ringing resumed on the four bell towers, with the event concluding at 4:45 PM.
The event was organized by the Associazione Campanari Lucchesi with the Municipality of Fosciandora and the local Pro Loco, celebrating the UNESCO recognition of the art of bell ringing as Intangible Cultural Heritage.
Fosciandora can be reached by car via the SR445 road of the Garfagnana; the meeting point is in Piazza Luigi Roni, in the hamlet of Migliano. By train, the reference station is Castelnuovo di Garfagnana on the Lucca-Aulla line, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
Admission to the bell-ringing performances is free. Activities take place throughout the day, from morning until late afternoon. The community lunch generally requires a reservation.
We recommend comfortable clothing and suitable footwear for moving between the hamlets and bell towers. For information and lunch reservations, it is useful to contact the Associazione Campanari Lucchesi or the local Pro Loco via their social media channels.
