The hillside village of Ischia relives the 19th-century Neapolitan Christmas

Campagnano is a hillside district of the Municipality of Ischia, in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania: a cluster of farmhouses, vineyards, and cellars carved into the tuff, overlooking the sea and the silhouette of the Aragonese Castle. Every year, in the final days of December, this agricultural village transforms into a living nativity, one of the most iconic Christmas events on the island of Ischia.
This is not merely a sacred performance: the entire community of Campagnano—families, young people, the elderly, and groups of friends—dedicates weeks to the event, sewing costumes, cleaning caves, and setting up workshops. The result is a journey through alleys, courtyards, and cellars, where every corner tells the story of a craft or a scene from the Nativity.
The opening, traditionally at 4:00 PM, is marked by the procession of the Magi, which sets off from the nearby district of Sant'Antuono and climbs toward Campagnano to bring gifts to the Nativity grotto. From there, the public follows a path that winds through the Villa di Campagnano, the village lanes, the cellars, and the natural crevices of the hill, leading to the hut housing the Holy Family.
Local reports mention over 250 costumed performers: a remarkable number for a district with only a few hundred inhabitants, which speaks volumes about how deeply the event is felt by the locals.
The declared model is the 19th-century Neapolitan nativity, reconstructed through the crafts that once animated the rural villages of Ischia. Along the route, visitors encounter:
A symbolic currency, the turnesi, circulates throughout the route, allowing visitors to purchase small handicrafts and samples in the workshops: a detail that makes the experience more immersive and engaging for children.
The Campagnano living nativity was born in the early 2000s through the initiative of the cultural association linked to the Villa di Campagnano and the local parish, with the patronage of the Municipality of Ischia. In 2017, the island press reported on the 15th edition; in December 2025, the 20th edition was celebrated, a sign of rare continuity for an event that is entirely volunteer-run and self-produced.
The chill of late December is softened by roasted chestnuts, hot chocolate, and wine from local cellars, also served hot and spiced. This is no minor detail: the Campagnano nativity is also a way to showcase the products of a hillside that continues to cultivate vines just a stone's throw from the port of Ischia, in a region of Campania where the bond between religious festivals and peasant culture remains incredibly strong.
The event traditionally falls between December 27th and 30th, with continuous hours from the afternoon into the evening: in recent editions, the route has remained open from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM. The date is announced by the organizers and the Municipality of Ischia as part of the island's Christmas program, usually in the weeks leading up to Christmas.
Following the 20th edition in December 2025, the Campagnano Living Nativity does not yet have an official calendar for 2026. The date indicated on this page is purely indicative and follows the pattern of recent editions, which have scheduled the event between December 27th and 30th.
As this is an entirely volunteer-run event, produced by the local community with the patronage of the Municipality of Ischia, the announcement usually arrives in December, along with the island's Christmas program and the municipal traffic ordinance regulating access to the village.
The format has been established for twenty years: opening of the route in the afternoon, Magi procession from Sant'Antuono, a journey through the Villa di Campagnano, the alleys, cellars, and caves of the hill, workshops and ancient 19th-century Neapolitan crafts animated by over 250 costumed performers, tastings of local products along the way, and closing in the evening.
Those planning a trip to Ischia between Christmas and New Year's should verify the date on the organizers' or the Municipality's channels before leaving: in the meantime, this page will be updated as soon as official information becomes available.
Ischia can be reached by ferry or hydrofoil from Naples (Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa) and from Pozzuoli. From the port of Ischia, Campagnano is located a few kilometers to the southeast, along the road that climbs the hill and is served by the island's urban buses.
In recent editions, a free shuttle service has operated from the Enzo Mazzella municipal stadium parking lot to the entrance of the route, running for the entire duration of the event.
Every year, the Municipality of Ischia issues an ordinance closing the village section involved in the nativity to traffic starting from the early afternoon: it is advisable to leave your car in the designated areas and take the shuttle or walk up.
