About Cammarata Living Nativity

Every year, between late December and Epiphany, one of Sicily's most evocative living nativity scenes comes to life in the medieval San Vito district of Cammarata, in the province of Agrigento. Around two hundred performers in 19th and early 20th-century attire bring the stone alleys of the historic center to life, recreating forgotten trades, scenes of rural life, and the Nativity. Visitors enter through the ancient "u patu" arch on Via Coffari for a journey back in time, filled with workshops, the scent of freshly baked bread, and a timeless atmosphere.

A journey through time in the heart of Cammarata

Perched on the slopes of Mount Cammarata, in the Free Municipal Consortium of Agrigento, the town of Cammarata is a living nativity scene in itself: stone houses huddled together, narrow alleys, arches, and stairways leading up to the Rocca. It is in this natural setting, specifically the San Vito district, that the Cammarata Living Nativity comes to life every year, widely considered one of the most beautiful and authentic in all of Sicily.

A tradition born in 2003

The event began in 2003 within the San Vito parish community, thanks to the dedication of the Associazione SS. Crocifisso degli Angeli, which still coordinates the event today with the involvement of volunteers of all generations. In just over twenty years, it has become one of the most anticipated Christmas events in central-western Sicily, drawing visitors from across the island and beyond.

The route and scenes

The entrance is located on Via Coffari, under the ancient arch of Arab origin known as "u patu," which transports visitors to another era. The route winds through ancient stone dwellings, narrow streets, and the old stables of the historic district, climbing toward the Rocca. Along the way, dozens of living tableaux come to life: the classic peasant family gathered around the hearth, merchants promoting their wares, artisans working in their shops, and children and animals filling the streets and courtyards.

Ancient trades

Around two hundred performers in 19th and early 20th-century costumes reconstruct long-lost trades, using agricultural tools and artisanal implements provided by the residents themselves, drawing on the memories of the town's elders:

  • Blacksmiths, cobblers, and chair caners
  • Bakers, millers, and pasta makers
  • Potters, stonemasons, and woodcarvers
  • Embroiderers and weavers
  • Winemakers, charcoal burners, and threshing demonstrations

Traditional flavors

The route is enriched by tastings of local products prepared according to traditional methods: bread fresh from wood-fired ovens, legume soup, fresh ricotta, and Sicilian peasant specialties that recreate the flavors of the "paupers' market" from a century ago.

Why it is worth visiting

More than just a representation of the Nativity, the Cammarata Living Nativity is a collective tribute to the memory, faith, and folk traditions of Sicily. The attention to scenographic detail, the involvement of the entire community, and the unique setting of the historic center make it an immersive experience and one of the most representative Christmas events in the province of Agrigento.

Cammarata Living Nativity — edition 2026

The 20th edition of the Cammarata Living Nativity celebrated the event's two-decade milestone with seven days of performances in the San Vito district. Around two hundred performers in 19th and early 20th-century attire brought the historic center to life, featuring ancient trades, scenes of rural life, and tastings of local products, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM.

20th edition — the twenty-year milestone

The 2025-2026 edition marked the twentieth anniversary of the Cammarata Living Nativity, which began in 2003 in the San Vito parish. Along the stone streets of the historic district, with the entrance on Via Coffari under the "u patu" arch, visitors revisited scenes of daily life from the past: peasant families around the hearth, merchants, artisans in their workshops, and the Nativity.
