About Calici in Montagna

Calici in Montagna is the signature food and wine event in Floresta, Sicily's highest municipality at 1,275 meters in the Nebrodi Mountains, near Messina. Every summer, Piazza Umberto I comes alive with tastings of premium wines from Mount Etna and the Tyrrhenian coast, local Nebrodi specialties like the famous provola di Floresta, live cooking demonstrations, folk music, and dancing under the stars. It is an event that blends Sicilian wine culture with the crisp air of the high mountains, set in an authentic and convivial atmosphere in the heart of the Nebrodi Park.

Calici in Montagna: Sicilian wine at 1,275 meters

Calici in Montagna is an evening dedicated to the wines and flavors of the Nebrodi region, held in Floresta, the highest town in Sicily at 1,275 meters above sea level, in the province of Messina. The event transforms Piazza Umberto I into a large open-air lounge where visitors can sample excellent wines paired with local Sicilian mountain products, all within the unique natural setting of the Nebrodi Park.

Premium wines between Etna and the Tyrrhenian

The evening's highlight is the wine tasting: from the great volcanic reds and whites of Mount Etna to the labels from the Tyrrhenian coast, the event offers a comprehensive and curated overview of the island's oenological variety. Participating wineries present their wines to the public, who can enjoy them while strolling between tasting stands as the sun sets over the Nebrodi peaks.

The flavors of the Nebrodi

Alongside the wine, the stars of the show are the local products: cheeses, cured meats, and regional specialties, most notably the renowned provola di Floresta, known for its characteristic pear shape. The event also features live cooking demonstrations, where traditional dishes are paired with the wines offered by the wineries.

Music, dancing, and folk traditions

The evening concludes with a celebration: live music, traditional folk rhythms, and dancing fill the square until late at night. In previous editions, the event has been linked to the Notte della Taranta, with pizzica bands and DJ sets drawing residents and visitors alike into a successful fusion of wine culture and folk festival.

Floresta and the Nebrodi

Visiting Calici in Montagna is also the perfect opportunity to discover Floresta, a small village in the Sicilian Region nestled between the Alcantara and Naso valleys, famous for its cool climate, pastures, and livestock farming. The event celebrates the town's rural identity and its welcoming spirit, offering visitors a unique summer evening away from the coastal heat, immersed in the nature of the Nebrodi Park.

Calici in Montagna — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of Calici in Montagna is expected to take place in mid-August in Floresta, following the tradition of previous years. Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. The evening is expected to feature the established format: tastings of premium wines from Mount Etna and the Tyrrhenian coast, local Nebrodi delicacies, and folk music in Piazza Umberto I.

Official dates and the program for the 2026 edition of Calici in Montagna in Floresta have not yet been announced. In previous years, the event has taken place in mid-August in Piazza Umberto I, featuring Sicilian wine tastings, local Nebrodi products, and a musical evening. We recommend checking the official channels of the Municipality of Floresta for updates on the new edition.

Practical information — Calici in Montagna

How to get there

Floresta can be reached by car via the SS116 road, which connects Randazzo (on the Etna side) to Capo d'Orlando and the Tyrrhenian coast. The nearest motorway exit on the A20 Messina-Palermo is Brolo/Capo d'Orlando, from where you head inland into the Nebrodi mountains.

Where it takes place

The event is held in Piazza Umberto I, in the town center. As this is the highest municipality in Sicily (1,275 m), temperatures drop in the evening: we recommend bringing a warm layer.

Admission

The event is free to attend; wine and food tastings may require the purchase of glasses or tickets at the tasting stands.
