About Calatabiano Carnival

The Calatabiano Carnival is the most vibrant winter event in this village in the province of Catania, nestled at the foot of a medieval castle in the Alcantara Valley. Organized by the Pro Loco, the festival brings a parade of allegorical floats and masked groups to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, featuring musical performances, entertainment, and a special day for children. It is a genuine, free, and community-driven village celebration that unites local associations and families from the Etna region for two intense days of music, dancing, and joy.

The Calatabiano Carnival

The Calatabiano Carnival is one of the most cherished traditions in the festive calendar of this town in the province of Catania, Sicily. Every year, as the carnival season arrives, the historic center comes alive with colors, confetti, and masks: the Pro Loco of Calatabiano, in collaboration with local associations, organizes a town square celebration that engages both adults and children, drawing visitors from the neighboring towns of the Alcantara Valley and the Ionian coast.

Allegorical floats and masked groups

The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups that winds through Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the town's main square facing the town hall. The floats, passionately crafted by local groups, are accompanied by choreography, flamboyant costumes, and plenty of music. The program includes:

  • musical and entertainment shows in the square;
  • dancing and street animation in the town center;
  • participation from local groups and associations, such as the town's dance school.

A day for children

The Calatabiano Carnival dedicates a special space to the little ones with the Children's Carnival, organized by the Pro Loco at the ITC Macherione Auditorium: an indoor party with music, games, and costumes designed for families, making the event suitable for all ages.

Calatabiano, the village of the castle and the Alcantara

The festival takes place in a charming setting. Calatabiano is dominated by its medieval castle, a fortification featuring Arab, Norman, and Aragonese influences, overlooking the fertile valley carved by the Alcantara river, amidst citrus and olive groves. The Carnival is just one highlight of a rich calendar that also includes the patronal feast of Saint George, the Medlar Festival, and various summer events. Experiencing the Carnival here means discovering the authenticity of a small Sicilian village off the beaten tourist path.
