Floats, masks, and village festivities at the foot of the castle
The Calatabiano Carnival is one of the most cherished traditions in the festive calendar of this town in the province of Catania, Sicily. Every year, as the carnival season arrives, the historic center comes alive with colors, confetti, and masks: the Pro Loco of Calatabiano, in collaboration with local associations, organizes a town square celebration that engages both adults and children, drawing visitors from the neighboring towns of the Alcantara Valley and the Ionian coast.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups that winds through Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, the town's main square facing the town hall. The floats, passionately crafted by local groups, are accompanied by choreography, flamboyant costumes, and plenty of music. The program includes:
The Calatabiano Carnival dedicates a special space to the little ones with the Children's Carnival, organized by the Pro Loco at the ITC Macherione Auditorium: an indoor party with music, games, and costumes designed for families, making the event suitable for all ages.
The festival takes place in a charming setting. Calatabiano is dominated by its medieval castle, a fortification featuring Arab, Norman, and Aragonese influences, overlooking the fertile valley carved by the Alcantara river, amidst citrus and olive groves. The Carnival is just one highlight of a rich calendar that also includes the patronal feast of Saint George, the Medlar Festival, and various summer events. Experiencing the Carnival here means discovering the authenticity of a small Sicilian village off the beaten tourist path.
The 2026 edition, organized by the Pro Loco of Calatabiano in collaboration with local associations, took place over two days. Sunday, February 15, starting at 4:00 PM, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele hosted the parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, accompanied by musical and entertainment shows. Monday, February 16, at 4:00 PM, the Children's Carnival was held at the ITC Macherione Auditorium, featuring games, music, and entertainment for families. Admission to the events was free.
