The contemporary art ceramics exhibition that reinterprets the symbol of the Festa dei Ceri in Gubbio
Brocche d'Autore is the exhibition that in Gubbio, in the province of Perugia, celebrates the relationship between the Ceri and contemporary art ceramics. Born in 2002 from an idea by art historian Ettore Sannipoli, the initiative invites Eugubian, Italian, and foreign ceramists each year to create new interpretations of the 'brocca dei Ceri', the object that holds symbolic importance in the ritual of the Festa dei Ceri.
The jugs are considered "ritual containers" according to interpretations by scholars of the Festa dei Ceri from the 19th century to the present day. The artists, informed about the type and symbolic value of these artifacts, offer their own personal vision, in a continuous dialogue between centuries-old tradition and the languages of contemporary art. The exhibition is held at the Museo delle Brocche, in Via Baldassini, and is inaugurated each year in the week preceding the Festa dei Ceri on May 15th.
Brocche d'Autore is an integral part of the cultural ferment that enlivens Gubbio in May in anticipation of the Festa dei Ceri, one of the oldest folkloric events in Italy, declared UNESCO Intangible Heritage in 2013. The exhibition, organized by the Associazione Maggio Eugubino Pro-Gubbio A.P.S., is an unmissable event for ceramics enthusiasts and for those who want to understand the soul of Gubbio more deeply.
The 2026 edition of Brocche d'Autore, the 25th, is scheduled in Gubbio from May 9th to June 2nd, with an inauguration on Saturday, May 9th at 5:00 PM at the Museo delle Brocche, Via Baldassini 1. The exhibition, curated by Cesare Coppari for the Associazione Maggio Eugubino Pro-Gubbio A.P.S., presents new works by three ceramists: Katia Baldelli (from Gubbio), Giorgio Crisafi (from Umbria), and Alfredo Gioventù (from Liguria). The jugs, understood as "ritual containers," explore the relationship between the Ceri and contemporary art ceramics.
Gubbio is located in the province of Perugia, reachable by car from the SS298 from Perugia or the SS219 from Umbertide/Branca. The Museo delle Brocche is at Via Baldassini 1, in the historic center.
Opening hours of the Museo delle Brocche: Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 10:00 AM-12:00 PM; Thursday 5:00 PM-7:00 PM; Saturday 9:00 AM-11:00 AM. Information at 075 9273912 or [email protected].
