Sicilian street food featuring the iconic brioche col tuppo in Gualtieri Sicaminò

Every summer, the historic center of Gualtieri Sicaminò, a hillside village in the Nebrodi mountains in the province of Messina, comes alive for the Brioscia cu Tuppu Festival, also known as "Cose cu Tuppu - Sicilian Street Food". The event is dedicated to one of the most recognizable symbols of Sicilian pastry: the brioscia cu tuppo, the famous brioche with a round shape topped with a characteristic knob that resembles the traditional 'tuppo' (chignon) worn by women in the past.
The heart of the festival is the creative reinterpretation of the brioche, served in both sweet and savory versions. Alongside the classic pairing with gelato and granita, the stars of hot summer evenings, the festival offers original fillings that reinvent island street food: panelle, cunzata, caponata, mortadella and pistachio, as well as a gluten-free option for those with dietary restrictions. Special attention is paid to locally sourced products, chosen to ensure freshness and quality while promoting the local area.
Tastings are accompanied by entertainment and live music, turning the evening into an open-air street party that is free and open to families and visitors alike. The initiative is part of the Estate Gualtierese calendar and is supported by the Sicilian Region and the Municipality of Gualtieri Sicaminò.
The festival is also the perfect opportunity to explore Gualtieri Sicaminò and the Messina hinterland overlooking the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily, amidst natural parks, rural traditions, and authentic gastronomy. It is an evening that blends flavor, identity, and social connection, drawing in both locals and curious visitors from neighboring towns.
The Brioscia cu Tuppu Festival of Gualtieri Sicaminò is expected to return in summer 2026, presumably in August as in previous editions. The official dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated by the organizers, the Circolo Culturale Argus and Triskelès Sicilian Street Food. The usual format is expected, with brioche col tuppo filled in sweet and savory versions, gluten-free options, and musical entertainment in the historic center. This page will be updated as soon as official information is published.
The festival takes place in the historic center of Gualtieri Sicaminò (ME), Sicily, with free access to the town's streets and squares.
By car: Take the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, exit at the nearest junction on the Tyrrhenian coast, then follow provincial roads inland. The nearest train station is Pace del Mela / Milazzo, just a few kilometers away.
The event is typically held in August, starting in the evening (around 7:30 PM). Admission is free; you only pay for what you consume. Dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
