The festival of working horses and the timber industry in the Primiero Valley
Boskavai is a traditional event held in Imèr, the first village you encounter when heading up the Primiero Valley in the Autonomous Province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The event is entirely dedicated to forestry and working horses—robust breeds like the Noriker and the Haflinger—that for centuries were used for logging and transporting timber along the slopes of the Dolomites.
The heart of Boskavai is the caravan of carts and riders that travels through the villages of the Primiero Valley, starting from the Giare area in Imèr. Along the route, there are plenty of stops and refreshments, while in the village, demonstrations of ancient wood-working techniques come to life: cutting, transporting, and measuring timber just as it was done in the past. The day culminates in the evocative night-time historical re-enactment of the timber supply chain, which retraces the entire work cycle through the village streets, from the forest to the sawmill.
In recent years, Boskavai has become part of the rich calendar of the Gran Festa del Desmontegar, the great festival of transhumance and traditions of the Primiero Valley. In this context, the Imèr event represents the appointment dedicated to the forest and wood culture, accompanied by food stands with typical local products, music, and folklore moments. It is an opportunity to rediscover the deep bond between the community of Imèr, the mountains, and its woodland heritage.
Boskavai returns to Imèr on Friday, September 25, 2026, as part of the program for the 26th Gran Festa del Desmontegar in the Primiero Valley, scheduled from September 24 to 27, 2026. From 8:30 PM, in the village center, demonstrations of ancient wood-working techniques will come to life — cutting, transporting, and measuring timber according to traditional methods — with an evocative re-enactment of the forest supply chain.
The evening will be accompanied by food stands serving hot dishes and typical Primiero products, in an atmosphere that celebrates the historical bond between the community of Imèr, working horses, and mountain culture.
Part of the Gran Festa del Desmontegar 2026 (September 24-27), which includes exhibitions of cattle, Noriker and Haflinger horses, the 'Dì del Formai' (Cheese Day), craft markets, and the grand parade of the 'desmontegada' on Sunday, September 27.
Imèr is located at the entrance to the Primiero Valley, in the province of Trento, and is the first village you meet when going up the Schenèr Gorge. It can be reached by car along the SS50 Passo Rolle road. The activities take place in the town center and in the Giare area.
