Four days of books, culture, and local traditions in the village of Castelmuzio
Borghi in Festa & CastelLibro is the event that every spring turns Castelmuzio, an ancient village in the municipality of Trequanda in the province of Siena, into a vibrant crossroads of culture, books, and popular tradition. For four days, the town's squares and alleys, nestled in the unmistakable landscape of the Crete Senesi in Tuscany, host a packed calendar that weaves together two complementary souls: the village festival, with its genuine gastronomy, and the literary festival, with its author talks.
The intellectual heart of the event is CastelLibro, a literary festival that brings writers, journalists, scholars, and public speakers to Castelmuzio to discuss current events. Each edition is developed around a common thread: from the environment to politics, from technology to cultural identity, and the great social transformations of our time. Book presentations, round tables, and workshops take place in iconic spots around the village, such as the Terrazza del Belvedere, offering the public an opportunity for in-depth discussion in an intimate and cozy atmosphere.
Alongside the cultural appointments, Borghi in Festa celebrates conviviality and the authentic flavors of the region. The absolute stars are the pici all'aglione, a symbol of Sienese cuisine, alongside extra virgin olive oil and other local delicacies prepared by the village cooks. The food stalls, managed by local associations, accompany evenings of live music, DJ sets, and shows that keep Castelmuzio lively until late at night.
The event also gives ample space to quality craftsmanship with the Le mani sapienti fair, which brings together masters of ancient and contemporary trades: from terracotta work to wrought iron, from weaving to calligraphy. There are also workshops for adults and children, vintage car and motorcycle rallies, flag-waver and drummer performances, as well as moments tied to the village's religious tradition, such as Holy Mass and the procession with the flower festival (infiorata).
Borghi in Festa & CastelLibro is much more than a cultural event: it is how a small Tuscany community chooses to tell its story, enhancing its historical, landscape, and gastronomic heritage. Organized by local associations with the patronage of the Tuscany Region and the Municipality of Trequanda, the festival is an invitation to rediscover the slow and authentic rhythm of the Crete Senesi villages, where reading and celebration become opportunities for meeting and community.
The ninth edition of Borghi in Festa & CastelLibro was held in Castelmuzio from May 30th to June 2nd, 2026. The literary festival was dedicated to the evolution of the female condition, from the conquest of the vote to the challenges posed by artificial intelligence. Guests included Marianna Aprile, Sara Lucaroni, Daniele Magrini, Olga Mugnaini, and numerous other authors and scholars.
The event opened with the inauguration of the first Le mani sapienti craft fair and offered calligraphy, terracotta, and weaving workshops, the eighteenth vintage car, motorcycle, and Vespa rally, the performance of the Bettolle Flag-wavers and Drummers, and the concert by the Nomadi tribute band Tribù Nomade. Great emphasis was placed on gastronomy, with pici all'aglione prepared by the village cooks, and on tradition, with Holy Mass and the procession with the flower festival.
Daily program:
Castelmuzio is a hamlet of the Municipality of Trequanda, in the province of Siena. By car, it can be reached from the SR2 Cassia or from the Pienza and Montepulciano area by following the signs for Trequanda and Castelmuzio. The nearest train station is in Sinalunga, from where you can continue by car.
Access to the festival events is free. Food stalls and some workshops may have a cost based on consumption.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to navigate the village alleys and booking accommodation in advance at the agriturismos and facilities of the Crete Senesi, which are particularly in demand during the spring.
