The bonfire competition that, every March 19th, opens the Passiontide in the Arbëreshë village of Barile
In Barile, an Arbëreshë village in the Vulture area, province of Potenza, on the evening of March 19th – Saint Joseph's Day – the squares and districts are illuminated by traditional bonfires. It is a deeply felt event, organized by the Pro Loco Barile, which revives an ancient rite closely linked to the village's Albanian culture.
The event is a traveling re-enactment of the tradition of lighting fires in the village, with the aim of reliving the emotions and flavors of the past. At the end of the evening, the Pro Loco awards prizes to the three best bonfires, built by families and districts with stacks of wood. In the 2026 edition, the award went to the bonfire on Corso Italia, set up by the Caselle family.
The Bonfire of Saint Joseph is not an isolated festival: in Barile, since the 17th century, a complex ritual has been repeated that begins precisely on March 19th and continues with various events until Holy Week, when the sacred representation of the Passion of Christ takes place. The evening of the bonfires also marks the parade of the three young men chosen to play the centurions on horseback for the Via Crucis.
Promoted by the Pro Loco Barile with the patronage of the Basilicata Region and APT Basilicata, the event intertwines faith, community, and Arbëreshë identity. Barile is indeed one of the Lucanian villages of Albanian culture, along with Ginestra, Maschito, San Costantino Albanese, and San Paolo Albanese, and its bonfires are recognized as one of the most authentic rites of the Vulture area.
