About Bonfire of Saint Joseph

Every March 19th, on the night of Saint Joseph, the squares and districts of Barile light up with traditional bonfires. The Pro Loco organizes the Bonfire of Saint Joseph Competition, an Arbëreshë rite that marks the beginning of Passiontide and culminates, during Holy Week, with the village's famous Via Crucis.

The fire that opens Passiontide

In Barile, an Arbëreshë village in the Vulture area, province of Potenza, on the evening of March 19th – Saint Joseph's Day – the squares and districts are illuminated by traditional bonfires. It is a deeply felt event, organized by the Pro Loco Barile, which revives an ancient rite closely linked to the village's Albanian culture.

The bonfire competition

The event is a traveling re-enactment of the tradition of lighting fires in the village, with the aim of reliving the emotions and flavors of the past. At the end of the evening, the Pro Loco awards prizes to the three best bonfires, built by families and districts with stacks of wood. In the 2026 edition, the award went to the bonfire on Corso Italia, set up by the Caselle family.

A tradition lasting centuries

The Bonfire of Saint Joseph is not an isolated festival: in Barile, since the 17th century, a complex ritual has been repeated that begins precisely on March 19th and continues with various events until Holy Week, when the sacred representation of the Passion of Christ takes place. The evening of the bonfires also marks the parade of the three young men chosen to play the centurions on horseback for the Via Crucis.

Atmosphere and local context

Promoted by the Pro Loco Barile with the patronage of the Basilicata Region and APT Basilicata, the event intertwines faith, community, and Arbëreshë identity. Barile is indeed one of the Lucanian villages of Albanian culture, along with Ginestra, Maschito, San Costantino Albanese, and San Paolo Albanese, and its bonfires are recognized as one of the most authentic rites of the Vulture area.

Bonfire of Saint Joseph — edition 2026

On March 19, 2026, Barile renewed the Saint Joseph Bonfire Competition organized by the Pro Loco: the bonfires lit in the squares and districts of the Arbëreshë village opened Passiontide. The jury awarded the bonfire on Corso Italia, set up by the Caselle family.

The 2026 edition of the Saint Joseph Bonfires took place on the evening of March 19th in the squares and districts of Barile. The Pro Loco Barile, with the patronage of the Basilicata Region and APT Basilicata, promoted the competition which saw the Corso Italia bonfire of the Caselle family win. The evening marked, as per tradition, the start of the journey leading to the Holy Week Via Crucis.
