Every year, around mid-January, the small village of Filacciano, in the province of Rome, gathers around the Bonfire of Saint Anthony the Abbot. Perched on a tuff spur dominating the Tiber Valley, at the foot of Mount Soratte and just a stone's throw from the Tevere-Farfa Nature Reserve, the town finds its most heartfelt winter event in this great fire. As evening falls, flames rise in the historic center and the community gathers around the warmth of the blaze, amidst the crackling wood and the scent of seasonal treats.

A folk tradition rooted in Lazio

The feast of Saint Anthony the Abbot, celebrated on January 17th, is one of the most widespread occurrences in the Italian rural calendar and finds one of its most vibrant expressions in the Tiber Valley. Along with Filacciano, many neighboring towns — Castelnuovo di Porto, Morlupo, Capena, Magliano Romano, Sant'Oreste, Nazzano, and Ponzano — light their own bonfires on the same nights, creating a true landscape of fire that dots the hills of the lower Roman Sabina.

The legend of the fire

The ritual recalls the ancient folk legend, also recounted by Italo Calvino, according to which Saint Anthony, with the help of his faithful little pig, managed to steal fire from Hell to give it to mankind by hiding a spark in his staff. This explains the deep bond between the saint, protector of domestic animals and livestock, and the flames of winter bonfires. The ashes from the blaze, once kept as an amulet, were believed to ward off disease and bad luck.

Fire, music, and conviviality

In Filacciano, the bonfire is not just a ritual moment, but a full-fledged village festival. Families, children, and visitors gather around the fire for an evening of tradition, music, and conviviality, featuring tastings of local products, sweets, and hot drinks offered by volunteers. It is an opportunity to rediscover the joy of community and to share the warmth of a custom passed down from generation to generation in the chill of January.

A village to discover

Visiting Filacciano during the festival also means discovering one of the most evocative villages in the area: the 17th-century Palazzo del Drago, the church of Sant'Egidio, and the panorama sweeping over the valley frame an event that unites popular faith, local history, and a sense of belonging. The festival is promoted by the Ente Valorizzazione Filacciano - Pro Loco, which has been preserving and renewing this tradition in the small Lazio town for years.
