The great programme of the Bolognese summer featuring music, cinema, theatre, and dance
Every year, from mid-May to the end of September, Bologna Estate transforms the Emilian capital into a large, widespread stage. It is not a single festival but a coordinated programme that brings together dozens of series, festivals, and events promoted by the Municipality of Bologna together with the Metropolitan City of Bologna, in collaboration with Fondazione Bologna Welcome, Fondazione del Monte, and numerous local organisations. The 2026 edition features over 400 projects, largely free, spread across the city centre and the province's municipalities.
The pulsating heart remains Piazza Maggiore, with the historic open-air cinema Sotto le stelle del cinema on the large screen of the Crescentone. Alongside the concerts at Caserme Rosse โ home to series like Sequoie Music Park, Oltre Festival, and Bonsai Bologna โ are cinema arenas such as Arena Puccini at the Hippodrome. Parco Nord, Giardini Margherita, Villa Spada, and many city courtyards host theatre, dance, readings, and popular festivals.
Bologna Estate blends great urban culture with Emilia's popular roots: Filuzzi, the liscio dance and square dancing, the traditional Bolognese puppet shows with the Cuccoliana series in the courtyard of Palazzo d'Accursio, and festivals and sagre in the Apennine villages. Alongside these, auteur film festivals, exhibitions, contemporary circus performances, and innovative installations animate a multidisciplinary programme designed for all types of audiences.
Designed to be experienced by strolling, Bologna Estate is also an invitation to discover new urban spaces: neighbourhood squares, peripheral parks, historic courtyards, and places in the province that become open-air theatres for a few months. The complete calendar, searchable by date, neighbourhood, and municipality, is available on the official website bolognaestate.it.
The 2026 edition of Bologna Estate runs from May 15 to September 27 with over 400 projects, 218 in the city and 206 in the metropolitan area, mostly free. The year's unifying theme is "Color the City": a multidisciplinary programme that blends music, cinema, theatre, dance, puppet shows, exhibitions, and popular festivals in squares, parks, and courtyards across Bologna and its province.
The complete calendar, searchable by date, neighbourhood, and municipality, is published on the official website bolognaestate.it.
Bologna is one of Italy's main railway hubs: Bologna Centrale station is connected by high-speed rail to Milan, Florence, Rome, and Venice. From the station, the centre is reachable on foot or by Tper urban buses. By car, Bologna is at the crossroads of the A1, A13, and A14 motorways (tangenziale exits). Guglielmo Marconi Airport is connected to the centre by the Marconi Express people mover.
Most Bologna Estate events are free. Some series, concerts, and festivals require paid tickets or admission: consult the individual event listing on the official website.
The programme is very extensive and spread across the city and province: it's advisable to consult the online calendar filtering by date and neighbourhood. For evening outdoor events, it's useful to arrive early.
