The great urban festival celebrating Bologna's UNESCO Porticoes
The Bologna Portici Festival is the major city event celebrating the famous porticoes of Bologna, recognized in 2021 as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Promoted by the Municipality of Bologna together with Bologna Welcome, the festival transforms the heart of the Emilia-Romagna capital into a large, widespread stage for a few days, where music, words, and art tell the story of the city's identity and its future transformations.
The 2026 edition, the fourth, carries the theme "Heritage meets Creativity" and is linked to a double symbolic anniversary: the twentieth anniversary of Bologna UNESCO City of Music and the fifth anniversary of the porticoes' recognition as a World Heritage site.
The festival offers over forty events including talks, meetings, shows, concerts, guided tours, workshops, and walks. The narrative is choral, intertwining great international music with Emilia's popular culture, giving voice to public administrators, writers, artists, and protagonists of contemporary thought.
The Portici Festival is not just high culture; it is also an affectionate tribute to the popular soul of Bologna. The "Chiacchiere da Bar Sport" dedicated to the characters of Stefano Benni, the dialect song competitions, the Filuzzi dance, and the events dedicated to the city's sporting history reflect the authentic face of a community that lives its porticoes as a space for daily social life.
The event is supported by the Emilia-Romagna Region, the Metropolitan City of Bologna, and the Ministry of Tourism, and is part of the Bologna Estate program, the large umbrella of summer events for the Metropolitan City.
One of the distinctive features of the Bologna Portici Festival is its complete freeness: all events are free, with open access or by reservation for events with limited seating. This choice makes the festival an open occasion for residents, tourists, and families to experience the historic center of Bologna in a new way, rediscovering often little-known masterpieces of urban heritage.
The 2026 edition of the Bologna Portici Festival was held from June 4th to 7th, 2026, featuring over forty free events. The festival kicked off on June 4th with the inauguration of the exhibition "Aemilia Ars per Bologna. Art and the City" at the Civic Medieval Museum and an evening in Piazza Maggiore with the Portici Talks and the awarding of the Francesco Zanardi ALI Prize.
Among the most anticipated moments, on June 6th, the meeting with Luciano Ligabue about his book "Fuori e dentro il borgo", and on June 7th, the preview concert of the Respighi Festival Bologna in Piazza Maggiore with the Conservatory Orchestra and pianist Gloria Campaner. There were also the "Chiacchiere da Bar Sport" dedicated to Stefano Benni and the dialect song competition BULÃ…GGNA SOUND in Piazza della Pace.
Free admission exhibitions at Palazzo d'Accursio and Certosa. Full program on the official website.
Bologna is a central railway hub: Bologna Centrale station is about 1.5 km from Piazza Maggiore, reachable on foot or by city buses. By car, the city is served by the A1, A13, and A14 motorways; it is advisable to park in the park-and-ride facilities and continue by public transport, as the historic center is largely a Limited Traffic Zone. Guglielmo Marconi Airport is connected to the center by the Marconi Express people mover.
All events are free: some with open access, others by reservation due to limited seating. It is advisable to consult the updated program on the official website and book the most popular events in advance.
Most events take place outdoors in the city squares: bring water and comfortable clothing. Take advantage of a walk under the porticoes to discover the exhibitions in the city museums, which also have free admission.
