The feast of Saint Anthony Abbot in Fermignano, between peasant tradition and love for animals
The Blessing of the Animals is one of the most heartfelt and attended festivals in Fermignano, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, in the heart of Marche. The event is dedicated to Saint Anthony Abbot, the 4th-century hermit saint venerated as the protector of animals and farmers, whose feast day is January 17th. In Fermignano, the celebration is held on the Sunday following that date, so that the entire town can participate.
The event, in the form we know it today, was restored in 2001 by the Pro Loco of Fermignano, which wanted to revive this ancient peasant custom, recognizing the great affection of the citizens for domestic animals and the importance of the territory's cultural roots. Since then, the festival has grown year by year, becoming an eagerly awaited event for families, children, and animal lovers from all over the surrounding area.
The heart of the festival is Piazza Garibaldi, which comes alive from the morning with the missionary market, the setup of a small farm, and stands from volunteer associations. Throughout the morning, demonstrations take place that attract young and old alike: dog training by the Societร Educazione Cinofila, rescue demonstrations by the Italian Red Cross, and simulations by the K-9 unit of the Guardia di Finanza.
In the afternoon, the most exciting moment: the animals gather, and the procession begins, crossing the town, often accompanied by horse groups like the Giacche Verdi and local associations. The procession reaches Piazza Garibaldi, where the blessing of all the animals present is held, followed by a prayer to Saint Anthony Abbot, the distribution of blessed bread, and the awards ceremony for the art competition reserved for students of the local comprehensive institute.
The Blessing of the Animals is not just a religious rite, but a true community celebration that intertwines devotion, tradition, and solidarity. Alongside the main events, there are also charity collections of food for the province's kennels and catteries, confirming the spirit of care for animals that characterizes the day. Dogs, cats, horses, rabbits, and farm animals parade alongside their owners, in a serene and family atmosphere that makes this January Sunday an unmissable event for Fermignano.
The XXIV edition of the Blessing of the Animals took place in Fermignano on Sunday, January 18, 2026, with the usual program divided between morning and afternoon in Piazza Garibaldi and the historic center. The festival was organized by Pro Loco Fermignano APS with the support of the municipal administration.
The day confirmed the tried-and-tested formula: demonstrations by K-9 units, stands of volunteer associations, a missionary market, a procession of animals, and the final blessing. In the afternoon, awards were also presented for the art competition dedicated to students of the Donato Bramante Comprehensive Institute.
The festival takes place in Fermignano (PU), in Piazza Garibaldi and the historic center, on the Sunday following January 17th (the feast of Saint Anthony Abbot). The gathering of animals and the start of the procession take place in the afternoon from the area of the former sports field.
Fermignano is located along the road connecting Urbino to Fossombrone, a few kilometers from Urbino. By car, it can be reached from the SS73bis (Fermignano exit). The nearest train station with good connections is Pesaro or Fano, from which you can continue by bus or car towards the hinterland.
