The re-enactment of the Roman defeat of 217 BC, when Hannibal annihilated the legions of Gaius Flaminius
On June 21st, 217 BC, on the northern shores of Lake Trasimeno, the Carthaginian general Hannibal set one of the most famous ambushes in military history: taking advantage of the morning fog and the terrain, he annihilated the legions of the Roman consul Gaius Flaminius, who lost his life there. Right in Tuoro sul Trasimeno (province of Perugia), where the clash took place, this page of history is relived every year with a grand historical re-enactment.
The event, also known as Hannibalica, is organized by Legio I Taurus together with the Cultural Association Suadela and the Municipality of Tuoro. Hundreds of re-enactors from all over Italy and abroad (around 140 in recent editions) faithfully reconstruct a wooden castra with the camp of the Roman consular army and, outside, Hannibal's camp.
The camps are open to the public, guided by expert re-enactors, with workshops and educational activities on Roman tactics, weapons, military life, and cuisine (with recipes inspired by Apicius). The heart of the event is the representation of the battle, staged according to the scientific reconstruction by Prof. Giovanni Brizzi, a professor of Roman History at the University of Bologna, in collaboration with scholars from the University of Perugia. In keeping with local tradition, the re-enactment is also accompanied by the Palio del Tiro della Biga, where the districts of Tuoro compete by pulling a chariot through the town's streets.
The 2026 edition takes place on Saturday, June 20, and Sunday, June 21, in Tuoro sul Trasimeno. From 10:00 AM on Saturday until 7:00 PM on Sunday, approximately 140 re-enactors from numerous groups, coming from all over Italy and abroad, bring the Roman and Carthaginian camps to life. The Legio I Taurus and the Suadela Association are responsible for the reconstruction of the wooden castra and the educational activities. Saturday evening is dedicated to gladiatorial games, while Sunday afternoon features the representation of the battle according to Prof. Giovanni Brizzi's reconstruction.
Tuoro sul Trasimeno is located on the northern shore of Lake Trasimeno, along the SS75bis Perugia–Bettolle and the A1 motorway (Valdichiana or Magione exits). Tuoro-Navaccia train station on the Foligno–Terontola line.
Visits to the camps and educational activities are generally free. For updated times and details about the battle, consult the official channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco of Tuoro.
