A living nativity scene in the San Brasi district, featuring ancient crafts and local village traditions
The Basicò Living Nativity is one of the most cherished Christmas events in this small Nebrodi town, located in the province of Messina in the heart of Sicily. The event takes place in the San Brasi district, one of the village's most historic areas, where cobblestone lanes and stone houses provide a natural stage for a collective performance involving the entire community.
As visitors wander through the historic center, they are transported back in time: traditional crafts and the customs of rural Sicily are brought to life, meticulously reconstructed by the local residents. Carpenters, blacksmiths, spinners, bakers, and artisans animate the daily scenes of a bygone rural world, creating an atmosphere filled with popular spirituality.
The route culminates in the performance of the Holy Nativity, a central moment of intense emotional impact. The event is part of a broader Christmas program in Basicò, which also includes the "Nativity in the Village" competition promoted by the Banca della Speranza association, with exhibits held at the "De Maria" Baronial Palace.
The Basicò Living Nativity is a deeply defining event for the Municipality of Basicò and the entire Nebrodi area of Messina: a tradition that unites faith, memory, and a sense of community. Admission is free, with a suggested donation to support the initiative. It is a precious opportunity to discover an authentic Sicilian village far from mass tourism, fully immersed in the Christmas spirit.
The 2025-2026 edition of the Basicò Living Nativity was held in the San Brasi district from December 25, 2025, to January 6, 2026, with the closing day on Epiphany (5:30 PM - 8:30 PM). Along the alleys of the historic center, residents reconstructed workshops and scenes of peasant life, animating the ancient crafts of rural Sicily leading up to the performance of the Holy Nativity.
The event, with free admission and a suggested donation, was accompanied by the "Nativity in the Village" competition promoted by the Banca della Speranza association, with nativity scenes exhibited at the "De Maria" Baronial Palace from December 12, 2025, to January 11, 2026.
Basicò is located in the Nebrodi Mountains, in the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway (exit at Falcone-Montalbano Elicona or Patti), continuing along the internal provincial roads. The nearest train station is Patti-San Piero Patti, on the Tyrrhenian line.
Performances take place in the afternoon and evening in the San Brasi district (on the final day, January 6th, from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM). Admission is free with a suggested donation.
The route winds through sloping alleys and cobblestones: wear comfortable shoes. Warm clothing is recommended, as it is a mountain village in the middle of winter.
