Three days of Andalusia in the tuff-stone village of Sannio: flamenco, tablao, street theatre, and España Street Food
For three days at the beginning of May, the historic center of Sant'Agata de' Goti undergoes a transformation. The alleys, squares, staircases, and private courtyards of this town in the province of Benevento, Campania, become an Andalusian barrio: people dance flamenco outdoors, sip sangría, and enjoy paella in front of historic tuff-stone buildings. Barrio Fest was founded in 2025 by the Circolo Sociale Saticula—a local association established in 1881—with the support of the Municipality of Sant'Agata de' Goti. In its very first edition, it drew nearly 10,000 visitors in just two days.
This choice is not merely an exotic whim, but a recovery of historical memory. The village preserves traces of the long Catalan-Aragonese era in Southern Italy: the most famous is the so-called Catalan Window, an architectural detail that can still be admired today while strolling among the medieval and Bourbon-era buildings of the center. Hence the idea to revive, as the organizers explain, "that ancient atmosphere of exchange, encounter, and celebration" that once linked the Sannio region to the Iberian Peninsula. It is no surprise, then, that the event has received the patronage of TourSpain (the Spanish tourism board), the Junta de Andalucía, and the Instituto Cervantes: a rare international recognition for a local village event.
Barrio Fest does not have a single central stage: the program is spread across five locations in the village, encouraging the public to move continuously from one performance to another, just like in a true feria.
In addition, private courtyards and historic sites usually closed to the public are opened, serving as natural backdrops for the roaming performances.
Music is the true star. The various stages host a rotation of flamenco companies and groups specializing in Gypsy and Mediterranean sounds: Flamenco de Pitimini, Mestizo Flamenco, Flamenco Lado Sur, Las Sevillanas, Los Perros de la Calle, Gitanos, La Jumara, and the Esperanto Gipsy Band. Alongside bailaoras in traditional costume and Catalan rumba, the program includes the theatrical show «Nel senno di Don Chisciotte», a comic-poetic reinterpretation by Francesco Rivieccio and Costantino Punzo, performed multiple times daily by the Tablao San Vito company.
The culinary journey is a must: the España Street Food stands remain open from morning until late at night, offering paella (meat and seafood), jamón ibérico, tapas, tortilla de patatas, patatas bravas, croquetas, albóndigas en salsa, pinchos morunos, rabo de toro, and bacalao. To finish, there are churros, crema catalana, and tarta de Santiago, accompanied by sangría, wine, and beer. Purchases are made using tokens available at dedicated cash desks, with a conversion rate of one unit per euro.
Barrio Fest complements its performances with a cultural program that highlights local heritage: the May Flower Festival (Infiorata) in a special edition, with petal carpets laid along the streets of the center; theatrical guided tours dedicated to the "Catalan Sant'Agata" and the narrative path "La conquista de la Rath"; the contemporary art exhibition «Muy Caliente!»; as well as markets, processions, and street artists along the entire route.
Sant'Agata de' Goti is one of the most photographed spots in Sannio: the historic center is perched on a tuff-stone spur in the Caudina Valley, at the foot of Mount Taburno, with houses overlooking the cliff edge. The village is a member of the «Most Beautiful Villages of Italy» club and has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club. Visiting during Barrio Fest means discovering it twice: as a travel destination and as the stage for an open-air festival.
Following the success of its debut, Barrio Fest returned to Sant'Agata de' Goti from May 1st to 3rd, 2026, extending from two to three days to cover the entire May 1st long weekend. Organized by the Circolo Sociale Saticula with the Municipality of Sant'Agata de' Goti, the event received patronage from TourSpain, the Junta de Andalucía, and the Instituto Cervantes.
The formula remained that of a scattered feria: no central stage, but five stations in the heart of the village with rotating performances and roaming artists among the alleys. The common thread was once again the Catalan Sant'Agata, the town's Iberian heritage evidenced by the famous Catalan Window, told through theatrical guided tours, a special May Flower Festival (Infiorata), and the contemporary art exhibition «Muy Caliente!».
Free admission to the entire event; only food at the España Street Food stands was paid for, using the token system (1 euro = 1 unit).
By car: Sant'Agata de' Goti can be reached from the Caudina Valley and the Isclero Valley. From the north (Rome), take the A1 motorway to the Caianello exit, then follow signs for Benevento and take the San Salvatore Telesino - Valle dell'Isclero exit, then continue to Sant'Agata de' Goti. From Naples, take the route via Acerra-Arienzo or via Maddaloni and Valle di Suessola. During the event, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is recommended to leave your car in the parking lots at the foot of the village and walk up.
By train: The reference stations are Benevento and Caserta, which are connected by regional bus lines to Sant'Agata de' Goti; the nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino (approx. 50 km).
Free admission to the entire event, including flamenco performances and street theatre. You only pay for what you consume at the food stands, using tokens available at dedicated cash desks (1 euro = 1 unit). Some theatrical guided tours may require booking: it is advisable to ask at the information points set up in the center.
