Masks, parades, and festivities in Piazza San Rocco
Every winter, the town of Barano d'Ischia, in the province of Naples, dresses up for one of the most anticipated events of the cold season: Carnival. The stage is set in Piazza San Rocco, the town's main square, which fills with confetti, streamers, and dozens of children in costume. Here, the celebration is not just about fun; it is a chance for the local community to gather and uphold a popular tradition that has stood the test of time.
Also known as the Carnival Party, the event spans two dates throughout the carnival season. The mornings in the square are primarily dedicated to the little ones, featuring costume parades, kids' dance parties, entertainment, and awards for the most beautiful and creative costumes. There is no shortage of music, games, and shows that involve parents as well, creating the joyful and colorful atmosphere that is the true soul of Carnival.
The most recent edition successfully combined the traditional program with new surprises designed to make the festival even more engaging. Dynamic and modern experiences have been added to the attractions for kids and families, showing how this event knows how to renew itself while staying true to its popular roots. This balance between past and present makes the Barano Carnival an event suitable for all ages.
The Barano festival is part of the broader carnival calendar on the island of Ischia, in Campania, which during the same period brings life to the squares of Ischia, Forio, Lacco Ameno, Casamicciola Terme, and Serrara Fontana. Each town offers its own schedule of parades, shows, and entertainment, creating a network of events that celebrates the social spirit and identity of the island's villages. Experiencing Carnival in Barano means discovering one of the most authentic and family-friendly traditions of the 'Green Island'.
The 2026 Carnival in Barano d'Ischia confirmed itself as one of the island's most vibrant winter events. The celebration took place over two dates, February 12 and 17, with the highlight on Tuesday, February 17, in Piazza San Rocco, from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, when the square filled with children and costumes of all kinds. Music, games, and entertainment accompanied a morning designed for families and the little ones, in the spirit of the cheeriest festival of the year.
The big novelty of this edition was the arrival of the Ischia Laser Game, which stopped in Barano for the first time: a modern and engaging experience suitable for children, teenagers, and adults, adding a touch of adrenaline and innovation to the traditional costume party.
