About Balsorano Carnival

The Balsorano Carnival is the traditional festive celebration of Balsorano, a village in the Valle Roveto in the province of L'Aquila, nestled at the foot of the famous Castello Piccolomini. Organized by the local Pro Loco, the event brings the Piazzale del Convento to life with a parade of allegorical floats, bouncy castles, costumes, music, and fun for all ages. Now in its 33rd edition, the festival is part of the regional initiative "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo" coordinated by UNPLI, which celebrates the intangible cultural heritage of the Abruzzo region.

The Balsorano Carnival

The Balsorano Carnival is the annual event that transforms the center of Balsorano, a village in the Valle Roveto in the province of L'Aquila, into a cheerful stage of colors, masks, and music. Organized by the Pro Loco of Balsorano, the event attracts families, children, and visitors from across the valley, offering a day of celebration dedicated to the Abruzzo carnival tradition.

Allegorical floats and square festivities

The heart of the celebration is the parade of allegorical floats, crafted with passion by local groups and volunteers, which travel through the streets and gather at the Piazzale del Convento. Accompanying the floats are bouncy castles for the little ones, costumed groups, confetti, and streamers, creating an atmosphere of shared joy that involves the entire community. The festival combines playfulness with social connection, renewing a ritual passed down through generations.

In the spirit of the Pro Loco of Abruzzo

The Balsorano Carnival, now in its 33rd edition, is part of the regional initiative "Carnival with the Pro Loco of Abruzzo", coordinated by UNPLI Abruzzo, which networks over thirty carnival celebrations throughout the region. The project highlights folk traditions, folklore, and the intangible cultural heritage of Abruzzo, promoting the role of Pro Loco associations as guardians of village identity.

Balsorano and the Valle Roveto

Balsorano is the first town in Abruzzo you encounter when coming up from the Ciociaria region of Lazio, lying at the end of the green Valle Roveto, among the mountains of western Marsica. The village is dominated by the majestic Castello Piccolomini, a pentagonal fortress built in the 15th century and declared a national monument, which provides a striking backdrop for the town's events. Attending the Balsorano Carnival means experiencing an authentic celebration while discovering a fascinating corner of the L'Aquila hinterland.
