Two days of folklore, folk music, and flavors of the Ciociaria region at the Villa Comunale
Ballaciò is the annual event that, every mid-June, transforms the Villa Comunale of Frosinone into a vast, open-air stage dedicated to the popular traditions of Ciociaria. Organized by the Pro Loco of Frosinone with the patronage of the Municipality of Frosinone—the capital of the province of the same name in southern Lazio—the event has grown rapidly to become one of the city's signature identity-building events, alongside the more ancient Festa della Radeca.
The name itself says a lot: Ballaciò evokes both the dance and the ciocia, the traditional leather footwear that gave the entire area its name. However, this is not a museum-style re-enactment: the formula aims to bring the popular repertoire to life actively, with the audience following the groups along the park's paths instead of sitting in front of a stage.
The choice of the Villa Comunale is no coincidence. The historic park overlooking the upper part of Frosinone offers tree-lined avenues, clearings, and vistas that become distinct performance spaces. From 6 PM, performances multiply in different parts of the garden: the roaming shows allow multiple groups to perform simultaneously, so visitors can create their own path, moving from one dance to another.
The gastronomic aspect is an essential part of the festival. The stalls set up along the paths offer the rural cuisine of the Frosinone area, consisting of homemade pasta, cured meats, cheeses, and wines from neighboring towns. It is the most direct way to tell the story of a territory that, despite being only an hour from Rome, has preserved its own food culture, linked to the mountains and the Sacco Valley.
What distinguishes Ballaciò from a traditional food festival is its focus on documentation. Photographic exhibitions and vintage films restore the image of a Frosinone that no longer exists, while dialect appointments and poetry readings keep alive a language at risk of being lost. The presentation of volumes dedicated to local history completes a program that deliberately alternates entertainment with reflection.
Ballaciò is an event for everyone: families find a safe, open-air environment; traditional music enthusiasts find a rare repertoire to listen to live; and outside visitors get a concise yet authentic introduction to Ciociarian culture. The timing in June, with its mild evenings, and the evening format starting at 6 PM make it convenient even for those arriving from outside the province.
Those staying in town can take the opportunity to visit the historic center in the upper part of the city, with the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and the Palazzo Comunale, and to explore the province: the Abbey of Casamari, Anagni, Alatri with its cyclopean walls, and the Charterhouse of Trisulti are all reachable in a day trip. Ballaciò thus becomes an opportunity to discover a part of Lazio less traveled by classic tourist circuits.
The 2026 edition confirmed the open-air stage formula at the Villa Comunale of Frosinone, with food stalls and exhibitions open from 6 PM on both days.
The theme chosen for 2026, "two days of music, folklore, and flavors," guided a program that intertwined entertainment, documentary memory, and local gastronomy.
