About Bairo Cross-Country

Every winter, the small town of Bairo, in the heart of the Canavese area in the Province of Turin, becomes the capital of youth athletics in Piedmont. The Bairo Youth Cross-Country Race is a cross-country event for age groups ranging from primary school to the 'Cadetti' category, held across the meadows and woods of the Parco del Residence del Frate. Organized by ASD Podistica Bairese with the approval of FIDAL Piedmont and UISP, the event awards regional individual titles and attracts hundreds of young athletes from across the region every year.

A morning of sport in the meadows of the Canavese

The Bairo Youth Cross-Country Race is one of the most anticipated events in the Piedmontese winter athletics calendar. Every year, on a Sunday in February, the small town of Bairo—just past Ivrea, in the heart of the Canavese area in the Province of Turin—welcomes hundreds of young athletes for a day of cross-country running. The venue for the event is the Parco del Residence del Frate, accessible via Roncheise: a protected and scenic natural setting of meadows and adjacent fields, ideal for cross-country racing.

Who runs and what is at stake

The race is reserved for youth categories, from Esordienti (the youngest) up to Ragazzi/e and Cadetti/e. This is no simple amateur run: for several years now, the Bairo Cross-Country has served as the Regional Cross-Country Championship of Piedmont, awarding individual titles and qualifying athletes for the subsequent Italian Championships. For many young talents in the Piedmontese "green line," it is a crucial stage of the season to compete for the regional champion jersey.

A long-standing organizational machine

Behind the event is the ASD Podistica Bairese, a club active since 1974, which manages every detail with the approval of FIDAL Piedmont and UISP Ivrea Canavese and the patronage of the Municipality of Bairo. Its inclusion in the local UISP circuit and the federal calendar ensures that the event attracts, in its busiest editions, over 750 athletes from dozens of clubs across Piedmont.

A festive atmosphere beyond the competition

Even though it is a championship, the Bairo Youth Cross-Country Race retains the spirit of a village festival: families, coaches, and supporters gather on the sidelines, there is the option to stay for lunch after the races, and the atmosphere blends competition, respect, and plenty of joy. It is a great opportunity to discover a quiet corner of the Canavese and see the athletics stars of tomorrow in action.
