The Nativity comes to life among the homes of the Madonna dei Bagni district in Scafati
In the municipality of Scafati, in the province of Salerno, at the western edge of the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, the Madonna dei Bagni district is a small world of its own: an agricultural area nestled between the Sarno River and the border with Pompeii, which grew around the Sanctuary of Santa Maria dei Bagni. Every year, between St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany, this corner of Campania sheds its daily routine to become the Bethlehem of two thousand years ago. This is the Bagni Living Nativity, a performance that, in just a few editions, has secured a permanent place in the Scafati Christmas calendar.
The setup is located just a few steps from Piazza Madonna dei Bagni, along via Fosso dei Bagni, on a flat and easily accessible stretch. Visitors are not mere spectators: they walk inside the nativity scene, pass by the houses, and stop before the scenes that the district's performers animate in period clothing. Each tableau tells a story, and every detailโfrom the tools leaning against the wall to the fabrics, from the lights to the voicesโis curated to create a coherent and authentic atmosphere.
The hallmark of the Bagni nativity is its bond with the farming culture of the area. Alongside the Nativity scenes, there are ancient crafts, traditional agricultural tools, reproductions of colonial farmhouses, and the fruits of the Sarno Valley. It is not just a scenic backdrop, but an exercise in collective memory: the district tells its own story, its agricultural past, and its sense of belonging, using the universal language of the nativity scene.
Along the route, there is a space designed for the little ones, featuring handmade pasta workshops: children learn the ancient gestures of kneading, the same ones passed down for generations in the district's homes. It is the most interactive moment of the visit and one of the reasons why the nativity has become a destination for families from the entire region.
The trail is not visited on an empty stomach. Along the way, traditional foods and local wine are offered on a voluntary donation basis, which helps support the setup costs. These are the simple flavors of the Campanian Christmas tradition, served by neighborhood volunteers in a warm, familiar atmosphere.
The first performance dates back to December 2022, initiated by the Santa Maria dei Bagni Sanctuary Parish, then led by Father Mimmo Cinque, together with the district association and neighborhood volunteers. In just a few seasons, the event has grown from a neighborhood experiment to a city-wide event: the Municipality of Scafati now includes it in its official Christmas program, providing patronage, public space, and financial support.
The nativity scene is open between St. Stephen's Day and Epiphany, always in the evening, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. This is the best time to visit: the lit lights, the cold air of the plain, and the early darkness of December create most of the atmosphere. Those arriving from out of town can combine the visit with a trip to Pompeii, just a few kilometers away, or to the center of Scafati, where a second living nativity scene comes to life in the Vetrai district during the same period.
The 2025/2026 edition of the Bagni Living Nativity was the fourth of the event and confirmed the formula that has made the appointment one of the most followed Christmas events in Scafati, in the province of Salerno. Six opening evenings, all from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM, guided visitors inside the Madonna dei Bagni district transformed into a Christmas village.
The setup was developed a few steps from Piazza Madonna dei Bagni, along via Fosso dei Bagni, on an easily accessible stretch. Each scene told a story: ancient crafts, agricultural tools, reconstructed farmhouses, shepherds, and the Three Wise Men in period costumes. A choral story built by the district volunteers around the Santa Maria dei Bagni Sanctuary Parish.
For the little ones, an itinerant space was set up with handmade pasta workshops, an opportunity to learn the ancient gestures of kneading. Adults were able to taste traditional foods and local wine offered along the route on a voluntary donation basis. The initiative was part of the 2025/2026 Christmas program approved by the Municipality of Scafati, which supported the event with patronage and financial contribution.
