The 'hanging village' of Vitorchiano welcomes the new season amidst the colors and atmosphere of autumn
Autumn Magic is the event with which Vitorchiano, a village in the province of Viterbo in the heart of the Tuscia region, greets the arrival of the new season. Scheduled for Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, 2026, the event serves as the grand finale of the long Vitorchiano Summer program: after months of food festivals, concerts, and town celebrations, the village gathers one last time before the true onset of autumn, when the forests of the Cimini Mountains turn shades of red and gold.
Autumn Magic is organized by the Fuori le Mura association, a key local group led by president Florin Claudiu Dimisca. The association has become well-known for its commitment to community life: from the first 'Fuori le Mura' Fiat 500 Rally in the summer of 2026, sponsored by the Municipality, to its participation in the Notte Rosa with its own stands, and the Christmas festivities of the Friendly Village. With Autumn Magic, the association presents an event dedicated to the most evocative season of the year, designed for families, residents, and visitors alike.
The event was announced by the Municipality of Vitorchiano as part of the official 2026 Vitorchiano Summer calendar, a program that accompanies citizens and tourists from June through late September. Preceding events include the Vitorchiano Film Festival, the Cavatello Pasta Festival, the Threshing and Plowing Festival, and the Notte Rosa: Autumn Magic arrives as the seal on this long season of events, celebrating the transition from summer to autumn. The detailed program for the two days will be released by the organizers closer to the event date.
Vitorchiano is one of the most scenic villages in Lazio: its medieval historic center stands on a cliff of peperino stone overlooking deep gorges, earning it the nickname of the 'hanging village.' Listed among the 'Most Beautiful Villages in Italy,' the town preserves 13th-century walls, cobbled alleys, external staircases known as 'profferli,' and grey stone houses, alongside a unique curiosity: a Moai statue carved from peperino by a family of masters from Easter Island in 1990, the only authentic one existing outside the island. Strolling through its narrow streets on late September days, when the light becomes softer, is a small autumn magic in itself.
The Viterbo Tuscia region is at its best during this season: chestnuts, mushrooms, new olive oil, and wine accompany the many festivals that enliven the towns of the Viterbo province between September and November. Autumn Magic fits perfectly into this traditional Lazio seasonal celebration, offering yet another reason to plan a trip to the village and its surroundings, including Viterbo, Bagnaia with Villa Lante, and Soriano nel Cimino.
On September 26 and 27, 2026, Vitorchiano welcomes autumn with an event hosted by the Fuori le Mura association, a very active local group. The event closes the 2026 Vitorchiano Summer program, presented by the Municipality, which also includes the Avis blood donation day on the 13th of September. After a summer full of events — from the Vitorchiano Film Festival to the Cavatello Pasta Festival, and from the Threshing and Plowing Festival to the Notte Rosa — the Autumn Magic weekend invites residents and visitors to gather in the alleys of the historic center in the golden light of late September.
The detailed program for the two days has not yet been published: it will be released by the organization as the event approaches through the channels of the Municipality of Vitorchiano and the association.
By car: From Rome, take the A1 motorway to the Orte exit, then the Orte-Viterbo expressway to the Vitorchiano exit (approx. 1 hour and 15 minutes); from Viterbo, take the Teverina provincial road for about 10 km. Parking is available near the historic center, which is largely pedestrianized.
By bus: Cotral connections are available from Viterbo.
The village is best explored on foot along cobbled alleys: comfortable shoes are recommended. Late September evenings can be chilly, so it is advisable to bring a jacket. Nearby, Viterbo, Villa Lante in Bagnaia, and the famous peperino Moai at the entrance to the village are well worth a visit.
