Four days of independent music and craft beer in the historic center of Montefiascone
The ATB Festival, also known by its full name A Tuscia Birra, is the summer event that has been enlivening the historic center of Montefiascone, in the province of Viterbo, in the heart of the Tuscia region, since 2011. The core idea is simple and persistent: to bring life, music, and people back into the alleys of the medieval quarter, which remain quiet for the rest of the year. The result is a festival that blends independent music and craft beer, two worlds that coexist here without hierarchy.
The heart of the event is the Porticella area, from which an evening itinerary unfolds, crossing alleys, arches, caves, and old cellars carved into the tufa rock. Along the way, you will find beer pouring stations, food spots, and small stages, leading up to the Main Stage set up in the Rocca dei Papi area, the viewpoint overlooking Lake Bolsena. Walking from one stage to another is part of the experience: you don't just sit in front of one stage; you explore.
The musical programming is proudly independent: over thirty bands and DJ sets spread across different stages over the four nights, with a chillout area for those seeking slower rhythms. Over the years, the festival has hosted names from the Italian and international indie and electronic scene alongside emerging projects from the Tuscia region, with a fundamental choice that has never changed: giving space to those who do not go through commercial circuits.
The brewing section is the second soul of the event. Each edition brings about fifteen independent breweries from all over the peninsula to Montefiascone: producers present in recent editions include Alta Quota, AutAut, Bastian Contrario, Birra Bellazzi, Birrificio del Catria, Birrificio del Vulture, Birrificio Sabino, Entire Brewing, Evoqe, Itineris, Lynn Peak Beer, Officina del Baccano, Tsunami, Vento Forte, and ZERO.5. The mechanism is the classic one for Italian beer festivals: you purchase a Starter Kit with a reusable glass and wristband, then pay with tokens.
Alongside the beer stands, there are a dozen food spots with cuisines from all over the world, from local Lazio street food to ethnic offerings, plus the craft market stalls. It is not just a side attraction: for many visitors, the gastronomic stroll through the alleys is the main reason for the evening.
Montefiascone is best known for its wine, the Est! Est!! Est!!! di Montefiascone, and for its panoramic position over Lake Bolsena. The festival adds a different, younger, and nocturnal note to the postcard, serving as a gateway for those who want to discover the Viterbo Tuscia: the Rocca dei Papi, the Basilica of Santa Margherita with its large dome, the ancient village, and, a few kilometers away, the shores of the lake. Admission is free, which makes the ATB one of the most popular summer evenings in the province.
Behind the festival is the Associazione Libera Voce APS, a local organization founded in 2011 and composed largely of volunteers. The event is self-financed through the sale of Starter Kits and tokens, and every year it reinvests in the medieval quarter where it takes place.
From July 9 to 12, 2026, Montefiascone hosted a new edition of the ATB Festival โ A Tuscia Birra, confirming the formula that has made the event a staple of the Viterbo summer: independent music, craft beer, and culture in the medieval quarter.
The route unfolded starting from the Porticella area, climbing up the alleys to the Rocca dei Papi, where the Main Stage was set up. Around it, five stage areas plus small itinerant stages hosted over thirty bands and DJ sets, with a chillout area for the later hours.
On the brewing front, the edition brought together about fifteen independent breweries from all over Italy, accompanied by a dozen food spots with cuisines from around the world, craft market stalls, and relaxation areas. Free admission, with Starter Kit at โฌ5 and beer tokens at โฌ3.
The overall lineup featured over thirty performances by bands and DJs distributed across the stages set up in the medieval quarter, following the festival's established layout: Main Stage at the Rocca area, smaller stages at the Porticella and adjacent streets, and a chillout area.
Breweries present (list provided by the organization): Alta Quota, AutAut, Bastian Contrario, Birra Bellazzi, Birrificio del Catria, Birrificio del Vulture, Birrificio Sabino, Entire Brewing, Evoqe, Itineris, Lynn Peak Beer, Officina del Baccano, Tsunami, Vento Forte, ZERO.5.
By car: Take the Orte exit on the A1 motorway, then the Orte-Viterbo expressway and the SS2 Cassia road towards Montefiascone (about 100 km from Rome). Dedicated parking areas are set up near the historic center during the festival evenings.
By train: Viterbo Porta Fiorentina or Montefiascone station (Rome-Viterbo line), then local bus connections to the center.
The route crosses medieval alleys with uphill and downhill sections and uneven paving: comfortable shoes are mandatory. The evenings begin after sunset and continue late into the night. For accommodation, Montefiascone and the villages around Lake Bolsena (Bolsena, Marta, Capodimonte) offer farmhouses and B&Bs, but it is advisable to book in advance in July.
