Assumption Day Feast and Sea Procession

A festival born from the sea

In Torvaianica, the coastal district of the Municipality of Pomezia (province of Rome, Lazio), August 15th is no ordinary date. It is the day the community gathers for the Assumption Day Feast, the most cherished event of the summer on the coast south of the capital. Born among the fishermen who populated this stretch of coast after the Second World War, the festival still retains its most authentic character: the direct bond between Marian devotion and the sea that sustains the town.

The sea procession

The heart of the celebration is the sea procession. In the late afternoon of August 15th, the image of the Madonna is brought to the shore and embarked on a fishing boat provided by local cooperatives. From there, the procession heads out to sea, followed by dozens of decorated boats, navigating along the coast as the sun sets over the Tyrrhenian Sea. Those remaining on land watch the spectacle from the beach, often in silence, as the lights of the boats gradually flicker on. At the end of the voyage, the statue returns to land and the procession continues on foot to the church, where a fireworks display closes the evening. In case of rough seas, the route is moved to the shoreline without the festival losing any of its intensity.

Four days of neighborhood processions

The festival does not end on Ferragosto. Following the traditional structure consolidated over the years, the festivities span four days, from August 14th to 17th, progressively crossing the different neighborhoods of Torvaianica: from the Rio Torto area to the Carbonetti zone, from the Villaggio Laurentum to the return to the central church in Piazza Ungheria. Each stop is marked by an evening mass, a meditative rosary, and a procession that travels through the streets of the host neighborhood, accompanied by families who step out of their homes as the statue passes.

On the final evening, the Virgin returns to the Beata Vergine Immacolata parish in Piazza Ungheria. After the solemn blessing given on the churchyard, the square transforms into a place of civic celebration: the final concert in honor of the Assumption—often featuring historic brass bands from the Lazio region—and fireworks on the seafront mark the farewell to the central week of summer.

The Assumption Feast is part of the Pomezia Summer calendar, a series of events promoted by the City of Pomezia that brings life to Pomezia and Torvaianica from July to September with concerts, open-air cinema, white nights, and gastronomic events. In the days immediately following Ferragosto, the coast continues to host events, including the market in Piazza Ungheria and evening shows at Piazzale Kennedy: those arriving for the procession easily find ways to extend their stay.

Why it is worth the trip

Less than forty kilometers from Rome, the Torvaianica festival offers something that large city celebrations struggle to replicate: a popular devotion still practiced by locals, without tourist filters. The moment the boats line up in front of the beach, with the statue advancing on the water and the crowd standing on the shoreline, is one of the most evocative images the Lazio coast has to offer in August.
