The green king of the Irpinian spring, featuring food stalls and live music in the square
Every spring, Salza Irpina, one of the smallest towns in the province of Avellino, celebrates the product that best represents its hills: the asparagus harvested on the Apennine slopes of Irpinia. The Asparagus and Truffle Festival, known locally simply as the Asparagus Festival, has become a staple of the Irpinian spring calendar, attracting visitors from neighboring towns and across Campania.
The heart of the event is Piazza Michele Capozzi, in the center of Salza Irpina, though in some editions, stalls and seating have been moved to the Via Tufello municipal amphitheater, an open-air space that comfortably accommodates the public even when the Irpinian spring weather is unpredictable. The village is located just a few kilometers from Avellino and Serino, in a hilly area that is easily accessible and well-served by ample free parking, a priority the organizers have focused on for years to facilitate the arrival of visitors from surrounding areas.
The cuisine is the true star. In recent editions, the stalls have offered a menu built entirely around wild and cultivated asparagus, with the addition of local truffles to enrich various dishes. Highlights from past festivals include:
Everything is served at affordable prices: the festival remains a village celebration, not a gourmet event, and the commitment to generous portions and low costs is central to its identity.
Alongside the gastronomy, the program features live music and entertainment for all ages every year, with traditional Campanian folk bands enlivening the square until late. There is no shortage of local food and craft exhibitors, as well as direct sales of asparagus by local farmers: many visitors take advantage of the festival to stock up on fresh produce directly from the source.
The event is promoted by the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee, in collaboration with the "Ciao Salza" Pro Loco and the Salza Irpina Youth Forum, with the patronage of the Municipality of Salza Irpina. It is a classic Irpinian organizational model, where the religious committee responsible for patronal festivities joins forces with local secular associations to create an event that serves as a fundraiser, a way to promote the region, and a gathering place for the community and emigrants returning for the spring.
The Asparagus and Truffle Festival is the perfect opportunity to discover a hidden corner of inland Campania, far from the most crowded tourist routes. Visitors to Salza Irpina can combine the festival with a tour of the villages in the Sabato Valley, the wineries producing Fiano di Avellino and Greco di Tufo, and the hilly landscapes of Irpinia, which are at their most beautiful in May. It is a simple, authentic, and family-friendly weekend getaway.
The 2026 Asparagus Festival returned to Salza Irpina, in the province of Avellino, on the weekend of May 16 and 17. The stage was once again Piazza Michele Capozzi, in the village center, where the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee, together with the "Ciao Salza" Pro Loco and the Salza Irpina Youth Forum, set up food stalls with the patronage of the municipal administration.
The 2026 menu was built around asparagus harvested on the Apennine slopes of Irpinia, offered in both authentic traditional peasant recipes and more refined preparations. Alongside the food, as always, were local wines and typical regional products.
The two days alternated between musical entertainment and social gatherings, in a format designed for families, young people, and food and wine enthusiasts. The organizers highlighted the availability of ample parking, which facilitated the influx of visitors from neighboring Irpinian towns.
The organizers did not release a detailed schedule or the names of the musical groups: information was communicated as needed on the social media channels of the Maria SS. delle Grazie Festival Committee.
By car: From Avellino, you can reach Salza Irpina in about 20 minutes by taking the SS 7 Appia towards Serino/Sant'Angelo a Scala and following the signs for the village. From the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, take the Avellino Est exit. The organizers provide ample free parking.
By train: The nearest station is Avellino, which is connected by local bus lines; however, driving your own vehicle remains the most practical solution.
Admission to the festival is free. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls, with prices typical of a village festival. The official menu and prices are announced by the organizers in the days leading up to the event on the Committee's social media channels.
