The gift of milk, the legend of the cuckoo, and a communal lunch at Madonna del Cielo
On Ascension Day, milk took on an almost sacred value throughout the Cilento region. For once, shepherds would not turn it into cheese; instead, they gave it away to neighbors, children, passersby, and those most in need. It was a gesture of sharing and a wish for abundance for the coming agricultural year. In Laurito, a small town in the province of Salerno, Campania, this custom has not remained a mere memory confined to the stories of the elderly: the local Pro Loco association revives it every year at the Madonna del Cielo site, turning it into a festival open to everyone.
The narrative heart of the event is the legend of the cuckoo, tied specifically to the Ascension. It tells of a hard-hearted shepherd who, when asked for a bit of milk by an old man, hid it, pretending he had none. That old man was Jesus, who cursed him, condemning him to mimic the cuckoo's call as many times as the amount of milk he had hidden. It is a simple story, passed down orally from generation to generation, which is recounted live in Laurito to explain the meaning of the gift in Cilento's peasant culture better than any treatise.
The event takes place in the morning at a location that is part of the experience itself: the Madonna del Cielo plateau, overlooking the hills of the Cilento interior. The program alternates between demonstrations and social moments:
Participants are encouraged to bring an empty bottle to receive the milk: a small detail that speaks volumes about the non-commercial nature of the event.
The rediscovery of the rite in Laurito dates back to the late nineties, stemming from an interview conducted by a group of cultural anthropologists from La Sapienza University in Rome with a local shepherd known to everyone as Ciccio. His story brought back the memory of the cuckoo legend and the practice of the milk gift, which seemed lost. Since then, the Pro Loco has worked to promote this custom and return it to the community: the event has joined the circuit of initiatives recognized by UNPLI, the national union of Pro Loco of Italy, as an example of popular tradition that is lived rather than artificially reconstructed.
Laurito sits at an altitude of 475 meters, surrounded by the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, with Mount Fulgenti and its rocky cliffs dominating the landscape. It is a town of a few hundred inhabitants with a territory of just over twenty square kilometers and a religious heritage surprisingly rich for its size: the church of San Filippo d'Agira, the Madonna del Cielo church that gives the site its name, San Giovanni Battista, and the Madonna del Carmine. Traces of Greek-Byzantine colonization can still be seen in the local dialect, and the village was founded as a defensive outpost against Saracen raids.
Those who come to Laurito for the Ascension will also find a highly distinctive mountain and pastoral cuisine: cauzuni (pasta stuffed with ricotta), cavateddi made with chestnuts, mastacciuoli associated with weddings, and mozzarella preserved in myrtle leaves. The town's calendar does not end with the Ascension: on May 12th, the patron saint San Filippo d'Agira is celebrated with a procession; in summer, the Madonna del Carmine festival and the Ancient Maddalena Fair take place, while in winter, the inter-municipal carnival is held.
This is not a food festival with stalls and concerts: it is a short, morning ritual held together by a few people and a shared memory. For this very reason, it is one of the best opportunities in all of Campania to understand firsthand what pastoralism meant in Cilento and why milk, on just one day of the year, was worth more than any cheese.
The 2026 event took place on Sunday, May 17, a few days after the liturgical feast of the Ascension (Thursday, May 14), following the well-established custom in Cilento of moving festivities to the following Sunday to allow more people to participate.
The meeting point was set for 10:30 AM at the Madonna del Cielo site, with a format that combines demonstration, storytelling, and conviviality. The day opened with milk processing shown live, continued with the telling of the cuckoo legend by Franco Carro and the distribution of milk made available by Laurito's shepherds, and concluded with a communal lunch shared by all present. Participants were asked to bring a bottle to collect the milk, a detail that perfectly captures the spirit of the initiative.
The organization was handled by the Pro Loco Laurito, which has been working for over twenty years to recover this pastoral rite.
Laurito is located in the Cilento interior, in the province of Salerno. By car, it can be reached from the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, taking the Vallo di Diano exits, or from the Cilento coast by heading inland along provincial roads. The reference railway stations are the coastal ones of Policastro Bussentino and Sapri, connected to the village by local bus lines; the nearest airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi.
The event takes place at the Madonna del Cielo site, outside the town center of Laurito: it is advisable to arrive a little early to park along the road and reach the area on foot. Comfortable shoes are recommended, as the ground is dirt and grass.
Organized by Pro Loco Laurito. Updated information is available on the Pro Loco Facebook page or via email at [email protected].
Accommodation in Laurito is limited to a few properties: those coming from afar will find more choice in the agritourisms of the Cilento interior or on the coast between Policastro Bussentino, Palinuro, and Sapri, less than an hour's drive away.
