Music, culture, and flavors in the Natural Theatre of the Tirino Valley
Artistic and Territorial Expressions is the summer festival that brings Capestrano to life every year—a small village in the province of L'Aquila famous for gifting the world the celebrated Warrior, a symbol of ancient Abruzzo. The festival takes place in the Natural Theatre of the Tirino Valley, an open-air amphitheatre with the village as its backdrop and the sunset over the crystal-clear waters of the Tirino River—one of the purest watercourses in Europe—as its curtain.
Conceived in 2016 by the Il Bosso cooperative, an experiential tourism company rooted in the heart of Abruzzo, the festival is designed as a hub capable of intertwining diverse artistic languages. Each evening combines meetings with writers and literary presentations, live concerts—with a strong jazz vocation—and a terrace dinner prepared with local ingredients, served as the natural light shifts and fades over the valley.
What sets Artistic and Territorial Expressions apart is the fusion of art and landscape: the music is not simply dropped into a neutral space, but engages with the surrounding nature, the flavors of Abruzzo cuisine, and the spoken word. The audience enjoys an evening that begins with an aperitif or a sunset presentation, continues with a panoramic dinner, and culminates in a concert under the stars.
In recent years, the festival has partnered with Muntagninjazz, the widespread festival celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 2026: the Capestrano evenings serve as a preview and opening for the extensive jazz program that traverses the villages and mountains of Abruzzo. This bond strengthens the festival's musical vocation and integrates it into a regional cultural circuit.
Reaching Capestrano means immersing yourself in one of the most fascinating landscapes in Abruzzo, nestled between the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park and the springs of the Tirino. The setting, with the village behind the stage and the valley opening up before it, makes every evening an unforgettable experience where culture and territory blend authentically.
The 2026 edition of the Artistic and Territorial Expressions festival takes place on July 23-24, 2026, in the Natural Theatre of the Tirino Valley, in Capestrano. The two evenings, dedicated to music, literature, and the flavors of inland Abruzzo, serve as a preview and opening for the 20th anniversary of Muntagninjazz. Each evening follows the usual format: a cultural presentation at sunset, a panoramic terrace dinner, and a concert under the stars, with a strong jazz emphasis.
Capestrano is located in the province of L'Aquila, in inland Abruzzo. By car, it can be reached from the A25 motorway (Bussi-Popoli exit) or the SS153; the Natural Theatre of the Tirino Valley can be reached by following signs for the Il Bosso Tourist Centre, at Via Capodacqua 7.
Booking is recommended, especially for evenings featuring the panoramic dinner. For information and bookings: Il Bosso Cooperative, tel. +39 085 9808009, email [email protected], website ilbosso.com.
The evenings take place outdoors and begin at sunset: we recommend comfortable clothing and a sweater for the evening, given the cool temperatures in the valley at this altitude.
