Artena Nativity Town is the grand Christmas event that, every year from December 8th to January 6th, brings the historic center of Artena to life—one of the most charming villages in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the Lazio region. Perched on the slopes of the Prenestini Mountains, the town preserves a maze of alleys, staircases, and cellars carved directly into the rock. During the holidays, over fifty historic cellars open their doors to host artistic nativity scenes, markets, and food stalls, turning the entire village into one large, immersive nativity display.

A completely pedestrian historic center

Artena's unique feature is its entirely pedestrian urban center, considered one of the largest in Europe: no cars are allowed in the alleys of the old town. To reach the upper part of the village, visitors can hop on the Christmas Express train, take a shuttle, or, for the more adventurous, rely on mules—one of the historic symbols of the Artena community. It is this slow, traffic-free pace that makes a stroll among the lights and nativity scenes truly unique.

Nativity scenes, markets, and local products

The route winds through cellars showcasing nativity scenes created by artists and volunteers, alongside Christmas markets featuring handicrafts, decorations, and gift ideas. There is no shortage of food and wine stalls dedicated to local products, offering Lazio specialties and regional wines to enjoy during your visit. The atmosphere is that of a traditional Christmas, filled with scents, lights, and folk music.

The program: pageants, music, and the Christmas Festival

The event, concentrated on weekends and holidays, is accompanied by a rich calendar of activities:

• Historical pageants and flag-wavers, featuring Christmas parades and costumed groups;
• Concerts and street music, from solstice carols to the traditional St. Stephen's Day Concert by the local band, and performances by local groups;
• Traditional bagpipe music and the procession of the Three Wise Men on Epiphany;
• Children's workshops and Santa's House, with letters, games, and family activities;
• Street performers, jugglers, and light shows in the setting of Piazza della Resistenza;
• Running races, such as the Little Santa Claus Run and the Giuseppe Bucci Memorial.

The event also includes the Christmas Festival, a series of cultural meetings and conferences dedicated to the history and heritage of Artena, from the Arco Borghese to the village's memories, curated by the local Pro Loco.
