About Ars Manuum

ARS MANUUM is the piano festival promoted by the Associazione Auditorium which, between late May and mid-June, brings a month of concerts dedicated to the piano and its performers to the Garbatella district. The program alternates solo recitals, four- and eight-hand performances, and forays between acoustic and electronic music, with a free inaugural concert at the historic Formentelli organ of the Church of Santa Galla. An intimate, high-quality event in the heart of Rome's most beloved southern neighborhood.

A festival dedicated to the piano in the heart of Garbatella

ARS MANUUM – Piano and Pianist Festival is the event promoted by the Associazione Auditorium held in Rome, in the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. The festival is centered in the Garbatella district, one of the capital's most characteristic areas, and is primarily hosted at the Teatro In Portico, an intimate venue with warm acoustics that perfectly suits the piano repertoire. The Latin title, meaning "art of the hands," immediately declares its intention: to place not just music at the center, but the gesture and sonic craftsmanship of the performer.

A month of concerts, from historical keyboard music to the modern piano

The program spans about a month, between the second half of May and mid-June, with performances concentrated in two blocks. The format is that of a chamber recital: limited seating, direct contact with the performers, and programs built around a theme or a listening journey rather than a simple succession of pieces. Alongside the great classics of the repertoire—Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert—there is space for less frequently performed composers such as Amy Beach and Cécile Chaminade, as well as Busoni's transcriptions.

  • Solo recitals by Italian and international pianists
  • Four- and eight-hand programs, a rare and spectacular format
  • Evenings blending acoustic piano, synthesizers, and spoken word
  • An inaugural organ concert in the setting of a historic church

The inauguration at the Formentelli organ of Santa Galla

The opening night takes place outside the theater, in the Church of Santa Galla, which houses a historic organ built by Bartolomeo Formentelli. It is a free-entry event, conceived as a gift to the neighborhood and an ideal bridge between the ancient and modern keyboard: first the organ, with its repertoire ranging from Bach to the French symphonic school, then the piano, the star of all other evenings. A choice that speaks volumes about the festival's focus, attentive to the history of keyboard instruments as a whole.

Garbatella, a neighborhood of theaters and music

Born in the 1920s as a garden suburb, Garbatella is today one of Rome's most vibrant districts for cultural offerings: public housing blocks, staircases, shared courtyards, and an unusual density of neighborhood theaters. The Teatro In Portico, along the Circonvallazione Ostiense, belongs to this network of local venues that keep the Roman scene alive away from the major circuits. Attending an ARS MANUUM concert also means walking through the neighborhood, between Piazza Benedetto Brin and the gardens, and perhaps stopping at one of the area's historic trattorias.

Why it's worth attending

In a city that hosts major musical institutions, ARS MANUUM occupies a different and precious space: that of a listener-friendly festival, where you can talk to the performers at the end of the evening and where the piano is not a pretext but the true subject of the event. It is an ideal opportunity for music students, chamber music lovers, and those who want to discover a less touristy and more authentic musical Rome.

Ars Manuum — edition 2026

The first edition of ARS MANUUM took place in Rome from May 23 to June 18, 2026, with eight events between the Teatro In Portico in Garbatella and the Church of Santa Galla. Solo recitals, four- and eight-hand programs, an evening blending piano and electronics, and a free inaugural concert at the historic Formentelli organ marked nearly a month of music.

ARS MANUUM 2026: a month of piano in Garbatella

The 2026 edition of ARS MANUUM, promoted by the Associazione Auditorium, was divided into two blocks of evenings: one around the last weekend of May, the other in mid-June. The main venue was the Teatro In Portico, on Circonvallazione Ostiense, with the opening entrusted to the Church of Santa Galla.

The program alternated between classical repertoire and more unconventional proposals: from variations and dances by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Amy Beach, Cécile Chaminade, and Busoni, to a project blending piano, synthesizers, electronic drums, and spoken word. The finale, on June 18, featured an eight-hand concert, a rare format to hear live.
