Three nights of music, cabaret, and Irpinian cuisine at the Ariano Irpino station square
Every year in mid-July, the railway station square in Ariano Irpino, in the province of Avellino, comes alive for the Ariano Music Station. Originally conceived as a local neighborhood festival, the event has become one of the most popular summer highlights in eastern Irpinia: three nights of concerts, cabaret, dancing, and popular cuisine that attract families, young people, and visitors from neighboring towns in Campania.
The motto chosen by the organizers, «Let's light up the square!», perfectly captures the spirit of the event: giving the community a space to gather in a neighborhood that revolves around the old station along the Benevento-Foggia line. The organization is handled by the Pro Loco Nuovamente, led by president Luca Pannese, in collaboration with the San Giovanni Evangelista parish.
The festival's format alternates between different genres and audiences. It ranges from ballroom dancing and folk music in the early evening to concerts by historic Neapolitan bands, concluding with dance DJ sets late into the night. There is also a space dedicated to local youth with the Nuova Scena Rap Ariano Contest, a competition for emerging artists from the local hip-hop scene.
Alongside the stage, the Ancient Flavors Festival is the second soul of the event. The food stands, active every evening, offer dishes from Irpinian peasant cuisine: fusilli and cicatielli with ragù, veal stew, sausage and porchetta sandwiches, fried snacks, and draft beer. It is simple, generous food linked to the raw ingredients of the Ariano hills, enjoyed at outdoor tables while shows take place on stage.
The name of the festival is no coincidence: the stated goal is to recover home-style recipes—those once prepared in Ariano Irpino for village feasts—and share them with an audience that now includes many visitors from the Sannio region and nearby Puglia.
The Ariano Music Station is more than just a music festival. The event was born and developed around the celebration of the Most Holy Savior promoted by the San Giovanni Evangelista parish: in the days leading up to the evenings, a triduum, rosary recitations, and mass take place, while on Sunday the neighborhood community gathers for the procession. It is this blend of popular devotion and entertainment that gives the event the authentic character of a neighborhood feast, quite different from a manufactured festival.
The town of Ariano Irpino stands on three hills—hence its nickname, the «city of the Three Hills»—in a strategic position between Irpinia, Sannio, and Puglia. It is one of the historical capitals of Campanian ceramics, preserves a Norman castle, and overlooks a landscape of ridges and vineyards where DOC wines are produced. Attending the Ariano Music Station is therefore also a great excuse to stop in the historic center during the day, visit the Ceramics Museum, and explore the surrounding hills.
The event is free to enter, takes place entirely outdoors, and is held in the evening when the summer temperature on the Ariano plateau becomes pleasant. It is a family-friendly event with spaces for children, while also attracting a young audience thanks to the rap contest and DJ sets. For those visiting inland Campania in July, it is one of the most direct ways to connect with the community life of an Irpinian town.
The 2026 edition of the Ariano Music Station was held from Friday, July 17th to Sunday, July 19th, 2026, at the Ariano Irpino station square, in the province of Avellino. The event, organized by the Pro Loco Nuovamente presided over by Luca Pannese in collaboration with the San Giovanni Evangelista parish, revolved around the message «Let's light up the square!»: a community coming together to share its territory through music, entertainment, faith, and tradition.
The program alternated between folk music, classic Neapolitan songs, emerging rap, and comedy, while the Ancient Flavors Festival accompanied all three evenings with dishes from the local Ariano peasant cuisine. The evenings were complemented by the religious program dedicated to the Most Holy Savior, with the triduum, celebrations, and the Sunday procession.
The final evening featured a novelty: the live screening on a giant screen of the 2026 World Cup Final, followed by the Ariano Music Station lottery draw and a cabaret show.

The evenings begin in the late afternoon with the opening of the Ancient Flavors Festival stands; shows on stage generally start around 9:00 PM. Admission is free: you only pay for what you consume at the stands, with typical village-festival prices.
