The Castellammare di Stabia stop of the itinerant archaeological tour of Campania
Archeofestival is an itinerant event that takes visitors on a yearly journey to discover the archaeological heritage of Campania, visiting sites and museums that are often less known but of exceptional importance. The Castellammare di Stabia stop, in the province of Naples, is dedicated to ancient Stabiae, the Roman city buried alongside Pompeii and Herculaneum by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The highlight of the day is a guided tour of Villa San Marco, one of the largest and most opulent leisure villas in the Vesuvius area, featuring frescoed rooms, gardens, a large peristyle, and private baths that bear witness to the luxury of Roman vacationing along the Varano hill. In the afternoon, the itinerary continues to the "Libero d'Orsi" Archaeological Museum of Stabia, set within the 18th-century Reggia di Quisisana: here, frescoes, stuccoes, furnishings, and artifacts from the excavations of the Stabian villas are preserved, brought to light starting from the famous campaigns of the principal Libero d'Orsi.
Founded in 2023 on the initiative of the Gruppo Archeologico Terramare 3000 OdV of Poggiomarino, Archeofestival offers a long calendar of stops every year between the Sarno Valley, the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, the Vesuvius area, the Phlegraean Fields, and the Sannio region. Each appointment weaves together guided tours with experts, theatrical performances, storytelling, debates, and workshops on popular traditions, with the goal of enhancing these sites and strengthening the bond between communities and their history.
Like all stops of the festival, the Stabia appointment is also free of charge, with particular attention paid to school groups and families. Participation requires mandatory booking through the official website of the event. It is a precious opportunity to explore a fascinating corner of Campania's archaeological heritage, far from the crowds of the more famous sites.
The Stabia stop took place on Saturday, May 30, 2026, as part of the fourth edition of Archeofestival, the itinerant event by the Gruppo Archeologico Terramare 3000 OdV dedicated to the archaeological heritage of Campania. The day combined a visit to Villa San Marco and the "Libero d'Orsi" Archaeological Museum of Castellammare di Stabia, in the province of Naples, accompanied by experts and stories about the history of ancient Stabiae.
The activities were led by experts and archaeologists, with special attention to schools and families.
Castellammare di Stabia can be reached by train via the Circumvesuviana (Naples-Sorrento line, Castellammare di Stabia stop) and by car via the A3 Naples-Salerno motorway, Castellammare di Stabia exit. Villa San Marco is located in the Varano area, along the Archaeological Walk.
Participation is free, but booking is mandatory via the official website www.archeofestival.it. For information: [email protected], tel. +39 329 9756435.
Comfortable shoes are recommended for visiting the excavations. The "Libero d'Orsi" Museum is located in the Reggia di Quisisana, on the hill behind the city.
