The float parade that kicks off the carnival season in the province of Frosinone
The Arce Carnival is one of the most anticipated events in the province of Frosinone: traditionally, it is the first float parade of the Ciociaria carnival calendar, and every year it ideally kicks off the local masquerade season. The event takes place in the historic center of Arce, a small town in the Lazio region nestled along the Liri Valley, transforming the village streets into a river of color, music, and smiles for a day.
The heart of the festival is the procession of papier-mâché floats, authentic works of art masterfully crafted by the artisans of the province of Frosinone. Imposing figures, spectacular scenery, and meticulously detailed designs pass through Piazza and Corso Umberto I, where the crowds gather. The floats, inspired by cartoon characters, cinema, and popular imagination, are built by float-building groups from neighboring towns — Ripi, Torrice, Strangolagalli, and Monte San Giovanni Campano — who bring months of hard work and passion to Arce.
Beyond the parade, the day is enlivened by roving street bands, dancers, masked groups, and street performers who engage both adults and children along the entire route. There is no shortage of food stalls and vendors accompanying the public throughout the festive afternoon. The atmosphere is that of a classic village carnival: intimate, participatory, and deeply rooted in the community's identity.
The Arce Carnival is promoted by the Municipality of Arce, through the Department of Culture and Tourism, together with the Sant'Agostino Aps Cultural Association, involving local master papier-mâché artists and numerous local associations. The collaboration between the administration, volunteers, and float-building groups is the strength of an event that unites various communities in Ciociaria and attracts large crowds every year, with a strong presence of families and young people.
Set in southern Lazio, in the province of Frosinone, the Carnival is also an opportunity to discover Arce and its historic center, dominated by the ruins of the Rocca. Participants can combine the festivities with a stroll through the village and explore the cuisine and traditions of Ciociaria, a land of food festivals, popular celebrations, and ancient crafts like papier-mâché artistry.
The 2026 Arce Carnival was held on Sunday, February 1st, confirming its status as the first carnival parade in the province of Frosinone. Entertainment began at 1:30 PM in Piazza and Corso Umberto I with street bands and, as a new addition for the year, a group of Brazilian dancers; the official procession started at 2:30 PM.
The parade featured nine allegorical floats created by local groups: Toy Story (Contrada Colle Prato, Strangolagalli), The Pirates of Torrice (Colle San Pietro), The Lion Tamer (Contrada Mincioni, Forcella Torrice), Sonic (Ripi Tractor Gathering), The Gladiator (Amici di Sempre, Ripi), The Flintstones (Pro Loco Torrice), Imperial (Figli delle Stelle, Strangolagalli), Dream Clown Dream, and The Simpsons (groups from Monte San Giovanni Campano).
The event, organized by the Municipality of Arce with the Sant'Agostino Aps Cultural Association, recorded a record turnout, with the historic center packed with families and young people from all over Ciociaria.
The parade takes place in the historic center of Arce (FR), along Piazza and Corso Umberto I. Entertainment begins in the early afternoon, followed by the start of the float procession.
By car: Arce can be reached via the A1 Rome-Naples motorway, taking the Ceprano or Frosinone exits and continuing along the Casilina (SS6). By train: the Arce station is located on the Roccasecca-Avezzano line. On the days of the event, it is recommended to account for traffic diversions and parking in areas outside the center.
The event is held outdoors and is free to attend.
