Papier-mâché floats and masks in the heart of Salento
The Aradeo Carnival is one of the most anticipated and well-attended carnival events in the Salento region. Held in Aradeo, a small town in the Province of Lecce, Puglia, it transforms the town center into a massive open-air stage for a few days, filled with floats, masks, and music. Every year, the parade draws thousands of visitors from across Salento and beyond.
The heart of the festival lies in its papier-mâché floats—authentic works of ephemeral art crafted by master artisans and local carnival groups in the months leading up to the event. Divided into two categories, the floats explore themes ranging from social satire to fairy tales, mythology, and current events, accompanied by numerous masked groups and choreographed performances.
A defining element of the Aradeo Carnival is the Sciacuddhuzzu, a traditional Salento folk figure that embodies the community's historical memory. Its presence bridges the gap between the modern festival and the deepest roots of local carnival traditions, creating a continuous dialogue between past and present.
The parades wind along Viale della Libertà and the main arteries of the town center, with the main stage set up in Piazza San Nicola, where shows, award ceremonies, and festive moments are concentrated. Food areas, refreshment points, and stalls are located along the route to serve the public throughout the day.
The event is organized by the Gruppo Carnevalesco Aradeino "Oscar Tramacere" in collaboration with the Nuova Pro Loco Aradeo, with the patronage of the Municipality of Aradeo, the Province of Lecce, and the Puglia Region. The Carnival involves schools, associations, and local creative groups, making the festival a true moment of collective participation and a celebration of Salento's folk traditions.
The 36th edition of the Aradeo Carnival was held in Aradeo on February 8, 15, and 17, 2026, featuring three days of parades. The chosen theme, #MondiCheSiIncontrano2026 (Worlds Meeting), celebrated the encounter between cultures, imaginations, and traditions, transforming the Carnival into a space for shared creativity.
The parade showcased 12 papier-mâché floats and numerous masked groups, with original costumes and artistic performances. The route wound along Viale della Libertà and Viale Einstein, with the main stage set up in Piazza San Nicola. At the heart of the festival, as per tradition, was the figure of the Sciacuddhuzzu. The edition was organized by the Gruppo Carnevalesco Aradeino "Oscar Tramacere" with the Nuova Pro Loco Aradeo and the patronage of the Municipality of Aradeo, the Province of Lecce, and the Puglia Region.
Theme of the edition: #MondiCheSiIncontrano2026. The parade included 12 papier-mâché floats and numerous masked groups.
Aradeo is located in Salento, approximately 32 km from Lecce. By car, it can be reached via the SS101 Lecce-Gallipoli road, taking the exit for Galatina/Aradeo. The Aradeo train station is served by the Ferrovie del Sud Est on the Lecce-Gallipoli line.
Participation in the parades along the town center streets is free. Food areas and gastronomic stalls are available throughout the event days.
We recommend checking the official channels of the Gruppo Carnevalesco Aradeino for updated schedules, parade maps, access gates, and parking areas.
