Merate's patronal festival blending age-old faith, a fair, and the traditional 'pomelle'
In Merate, Province of Lecco, the patronal festival dedicated to Sant'Ambrogio (Saint Ambrose) is one of the oldest and most cherished events in the region. Devotion to Milan's patron saint has been celebrated here since the 15th century, while the accompanying fair has roots stretching back to the 13th century, when it was held between the churchyard, via Sant'Ambrogio, and the ancient "via della Fiera" (Fair Street).
The event, organised by the municipal administration and the Pro Loco of Merate (local tourism board), combines religious, civil, and popular dimensions. The religious programme includes a triduum (three days of prayer), solemn celebrations, and sacred concerts in the parish church, while the secular part features the large fair in Piazza Prinetti and the historic centre, exhibitions, and cultural events.
The most distinctive tradition is that of the 'pomelle' of Sant'Ambrogio: small apples that, according to custom, represented a token of fidelity between engaged couples. Revived and promoted, the distribution of the 'pomelle' takes place in the courtyard of Palazzo Prinetti, and is one of the most anticipated moments of the entire festival.
A rich cultural calendar complements the fair:
For Merate and the entire Lecco Brianza region, the Festa e Fiera di Sant'Ambrogio remains the most important winter event, uniting historical memory, faith, and popular celebration.
The Festa e Fiera di Sant'Ambrogio 2026 brings Merate to life around December 7th, the feast day of the patron saint. As per established tradition, a triduum precedes the solemn celebrations in the parish church, while the fair takes over Piazza Prinetti and the historic centre.
Among the anticipated events are the civic merit awards ceremony, concerts, exhibitions at Villa Confalonieri and in the civic halls, guided tours of the churches, and, most importantly, the distribution of Sant'Ambrogio's 'pomelle' in the courtyard of Palazzo Prinetti. The fair continues on December 8th as well. The detailed programme is published by the Municipality of Merate in the weeks prior.
Programme based on the traditional structure of the patronal festival (specific dates announced by the Municipality of Merate):
