About Actus Tragicus

Every Good Friday, the historic center of Forio on the island of Ischia transforms into an ancient Jerusalem for the Actus Tragicus Passion of Christ. Since 1982, this itinerant sacred pageant has brought the village streets to life with over two hundred performers, evocative music, and paths lit only by torches. Spanning over a kilometer, the performance invites the public to follow the final twelve hours of Jesus, from his Baptism to his deposition, in one of the most intense Easter events in Campania.

The Passion of Christ brought to life in the streets of Forio

Every Good Friday, the historic center of Forio—one of the most charming villages on the island of Ischia, in the province of Naples—transforms into an ancient Jerusalem. The Actus Tragicus Passion of Christ is an itinerant sacred pageant that reenacts the final twelve hours of Jesus' life, showcasing popular faith and Forio’s theatrical tradition in one of the most moving Easter events in Campania.

A tradition rooted in the 18th century

The name Actus Tragicus is inspired by an antique 1750 painting by Alfonso Di Spigna, housed in the Basilica of San Vito in Forio. The theatrical performance in its current form has been staged since 1982, thanks to the dedication of the Actus Tragicus Association, which involves the entire community every year in preparing costumes, sets, and music. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Forio and brought to life by the association's volunteers.

An itinerant route over a kilometer long

The unique feature of the event is its itinerant nature: the audience does not remain seated but follows the actors along a route of over a kilometer that winds through squares, narrow alleys, and open spaces in the center. The streets, unusually dark and illuminated only by torches, combined with ancient music, create an emotionally charged atmosphere where spectators become part of the scene.

  • Over 200 local performers bring numerous living tableaux to life
  • Twenty-two scenes retrace the life of Jesus, from the Baptism in the Jordan to the deposition
  • Costumes, extras, and music curated entirely by local Forio volunteers
  • An entire village transformed into an open-air stage

A defining event for Forio and the island of Ischia

More than just a show, the Actus Tragicus Passion is a collective ritual that unites the entire town of Forio and attracts numerous visitors every year from across the island of Ischia and the mainland. Directed by Pierpaolo Mandl and Luca Patalano, who coordinate the efforts of hundreds of people, the event is free to attend, reflecting the grassroots and communal spirit of this Campanian tradition.

Actus Tragicus — edition 2026

The 36th edition of the Actus Tragicus Passion of Christ took place on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, through the streets of Forio d'Ischia. This edition featured a major innovation: a completely new audio recording, with a revised script, re-recorded voices, and a redesigned sound system thanks to the contribution of vocal coaches and sound engineers.

On Good Friday, April 3, 2026, the historic center of Forio hosted the 36th edition of the Actus Tragicus Passion of Christ. From the afternoon, a hundred actors and extras gathered in the heart of the village, transforming Forio into an ancient Jerusalem.

The procession departed at sunset from the former Town Hall to reach Piazzale Cristoforo Colombo, near the port, where around 8:30 PM the performance began along the usual itinerant route of over a kilometer.

The major novelty of the 2026 edition was an entirely renewed audio recording: a project started over a year earlier, with the script reworked, voices re-recorded, and the entire sound system redesigned with the help of professionals, including vocal coaches and audio technicians.
