Three days of historical re-enactment to relive the ancient Aquae Statiellae
For one weekend, Acqui Terme, an elegant spa town in the province of Alessandria in the heart of Piedmont, rediscovers its Roman roots. Acqui Terme Romana is a cultural project dedicated to showcasing the ancient Aquae Statiellae, a Roman settlement famous since antiquity for its thermal waters, from which the celebrated Bollente spring still flows today. The event weaves together archaeological heritage, scientific outreach, education, food and wine, and historical re-enactment into one great community celebration.
The heart of the event is the historical re-enactment: over fifty re-enactors from all over Italy join local actors to bring to life costumed processions, traveling performances, and a scenic imperial ceremony that winds through the streets and squares of the center. Legions, historical figures, and scenes from ancient Rome parade between the Piazza della Bollente and the Castello dei Paleologi, which becomes the headquarters for the activities.
Among the most anticipated events is the Ancient Rome Dinner, an evocative experience spread throughout the city's streets and squares, where dozens of restaurants offer dishes inspired by ancient Roman recipes combined with the culinary excellence of the Acqui area. As evening falls, the Bacchanalia beginsโa Roman White Night featuring music, entertainment, and shows that enliven local venues, squares, and corners of the historic center until late at night.
The event has a strong educational and family-oriented soul. At the Castello dei Paleologi, workshops, games, and re-enactments are designed for children and families, while free guided tours take visitors on a journey to discover the Treasures of Acqui Terme, from the archaeological area to the Civic Archaeological Museum, created in collaboration with the Superintendency ABAP of Alessandria. The grand finale is entrusted to the Ludi Scaenici, a theatrical and musical performance inspired by the Roman stage tradition.
Promoted by the Municipality of Acqui Terme with the involvement of schools, associations, and local businesses, Acqui Terme Romana has quickly established itself as one of the flagship events of the Piedmontese summer, capable of combining cultural tourism, education, and popular celebration in the name of the ancient Aquae Statiellae.
The 2026 edition of Acqui Terme Romana confirmed the event's growth, with over 70 entities involved, including institutions, schools, associations, and businesses, and the patronage of the Piedmont Region, the Province of Alessandria, and the ABAP-AL Superintendency. Three intense days transformed the historic center into the ancient Aquae Statiellae, blending historical re-enactment, gastronomy, and entertainment, with organizers declaring it a success.
By car: A26 motorway (Ovada exit) or A21, then provincial roads towards Acqui Terme. By train: Acqui Terme station, on the lines to Alessandria, Asti, and Genoa. Nearest airports: Genoa and Turin.
