A masked parade through the streets of the Amiata village
The Abbadia San Salvatore Carnival is one of the most cherished events in the winter calendar of this village, nestled on the slopes of Monte Amiata in the heart of the Siena province, Tuscany. For one day, the streets of the historic center fill with masks, music, and color in a parade that involves the entire local community and visitors who travel up to the mountains for the occasion.
The event is the result of true synergy between local organizations: the Pro Loco, cultural, sports, and social groups, parishes, and businesses all collaborate to bring the procession to life. The Municipality of Abbadia San Salvatore supports the initiative, which serves as an important moment of gathering for the Amiata territory. Masked groups, marching bands, majorettes, and performers animate the route with joy and participation.
Each year, the Carnival revolves around a chosen theme that inspires costumes, choreography, and decorations. The 2026 edition featured the "Good vs. Evil" theme, while previous editions paid tribute to the world of music with the "The Show Must Go On!" concept. This variety of ideas keeps the event fresh year after year and stimulates the creativity of the participating groups.
The parade travels through the town's main streets, concluding in the central areas where the festivities continue. Along Via Roma and Via IV Novembre, entertainment, snacks, DJ sets, and aperitifs offered by local businesses turn the afternoon into a large, widespread party for families, children, and young people.
Known as the "City of Torches" for its evocative Christmas tradition, Abbadia San Salvatore is a village rich in history, dominated by the famous Abbey of the Santissimo Salvatore of Lombard origin. The Carnival is part of a dense calendar of events that celebrates the folk traditions of this corner of the Tuscan mountains throughout the year.
