The traditional New Year's Eve celebration in Gratteri, in the heart of the Madonie mountains
Among the most authentic and fascinating New Year's celebrations on the island, 'A Vecchia brings the streets of Gratteri to life every December 31st. Nestled in the Madonie Park, in the province of Palermo, this festival weaves together folklore, popular legend, and community spirit, drawing visitors from across Sicily to experience the final night of the year in a truly unique way, far from the standard gala dinners.
According to local tradition, the vecchia strina โ a figure similar to the Befana โ dwells in the Grotta Grattara, a striking natural cave located over a thousand meters above sea level in the mountains overlooking the village, from which Gratteri takes its name. On the last night of the year, the Vecchia leaves her refuge to descend toward the village; she embodies the dying year giving way to the new, bringing sweets and gifts for the little ones.
Around 8:30 PM, the sound of horns and cowbells announces the start of the descent from the Grotta Grattara. Wrapped in a white sheet and riding a donkey, the Vecchia reaches the village, escorted by young people in traditional attire who light up the night with wind-swept wax torches. Along the village's characteristic narrow alleys, she stops in the squares to distribute sweets and gifts to children, enveloping Gratteri in a festive and mysterious atmosphere.
After arriving in the heart of the village, the festivities move along Corso Umberto I, with live music leading the crowd toward the countdown. At midnight, Gratteri welcomes the new year with a traditional toast, tastings of local sweets, and a fireworks display that illuminates the Madonie mountains.
A small town with timeless charm, Gratteri also offers guided tours of the village and its surroundings during the day, allowing visitors to discover a territory of great natural and cultural value. The 'A Vecchia festival is one of the most iconic moments for the Madonie community and a precious opportunity to experience the folk traditions of inland Sicily.
The 2026 edition confirmed the traditional program of the festival. The day opened at 10:00 AM with guided tours of the village and its surroundings. In the evening, around 8:30 PM, the procession departed from Piazza San Francesco toward the Grotta Grattara; at 9:15 PM, the descent of the Vecchia began, accompanied by the ancestral sound of horns and cowbells.
At 11:00 PM, the procession set off again from Piazza San Francesco to reach the heart of the festivities. From 11:30 PM, the party moved along Corso Umberto I with live music by Blue Sound2, which accompanied the public toward the countdown. At midnight, Gratteri welcomed 2026 with the traditional toast, tastings of local sweets, and fireworks.
Gratteri is located in the Madonie mountains, a short distance from Cefalรน. By car, it can be reached via the A20 Palermo-Messina motorway (Cefalรน exit), then continuing along the inland roads toward the village. The nearest train station is in Cefalรน, from where you can continue by car or local transport.
The festival takes place on the night of December 31st, with the procession starting in the evening and culminating in the midnight toast.
The event is outdoors and takes place in the historic center: warm clothing and comfortable footwear are recommended due to the sloping alleys. As it is a very popular event, it is advisable to arrive early. Guided tours of the village are often offered during the day.
