The board game as a design object at Palazzo Arese Borromeo, during Fuorisalone 2026
During Milan Design Week 2026, the Fuorisalone circuit extends to Cesano Maderno (Province of Monza and Brianza, Lombardy), where the halls of Palazzo Arese Borromeo host the exhibition "0-99. Design for Play". Curated by Cristian Confalonieri, co-founder of Studiolabo and Fuorisalone.it, with co-curation by Alessia Interlandi (founder of In.circle), the exhibition investigates the board game as a true design object and cultural artifact.
The common thread of the exhibition is a fascinating reflection: the board game as a "closed system that simulates the world, coordinates conflict and cooperation, and makes the invisible structures of social dynamics visible". A journey that spans historical games, from antiquity to the 20th century, and arrives at contemporary reinterpretations by designers and masters of luxury craftsmanship.
Among the most spectacular installations is a playable 90-square-meter Risk game and two rooms dedicated to the legacy of game designer Alex Randolph. An active game library invites visitors to experience it firsthand, while author reinterpretations showcase the work of Italian game designers such as Simone Luciani, Tommaso Battista, Emiliano Sciarra, and Andrea Angiolino. An opportunity to discover how contemporary design dialogues with one of humanity's oldest and most universal practices.
The exhibition "0-99. Design for Play" is held at Palazzo Arese Borromeo from April 10 to May 10, 2026, as part of the Fuorisalone circuit of Milan Design Week. Curated by Cristian Confalonieri (Studiolabo / Fuorisalone.it) with Alessia Interlandi (In.circle), the exhibition explores the board game as a cultural artifact and design object, from historical games to contemporary reinterpretations.
The exhibition is divided into several sections:
