Irpinian spring in the village of Zungoli, among wild asparagus and stone alleys
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Asparagus Festival is the spring appointment that the calendars of Campanian food festivals place in Zungoli, a small municipality of just under nine hundred inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in the heart of eastern Irpinia. Here, at an altitude of 657 meters on the slopes of Monte Molara, spring arrives later than on the Campanian coast: when the woods and uncultivated lands around the village begin to produce their first shoots, wild asparagus becomes the star of the table and family stories.
Like many festivals in Irpinia, this event stems from daily practice rather than a tourist operation: picking wild asparagus is a ritual passed down from generation to generation, with secret spots known only to those who learned them as children. Transforming that harvest into a village moment, with long tables and tastings, is how the communities of inland Campania defend a gastronomic heritage that no official regulation has ever codified.
Irpinian wild asparagus is thinner, darker, and decidedly more bitter than the cultivated variety. It is precisely that elegant bitterness that makes it precious in the kitchen: in local peasant tradition, it ends up in omelets, soups, sauces for homemade pasta, and oil-preserved jars that accompany the cold months. It is not a product that can be industrialized, because the harvest remains manual and the season lasts only a few weeks: this is why the festival only makes sense in spring, and why its date can shift from one year to the next depending on the climate.
The festival is also an opportunity to discover the village that hosts it. Zungoli is part of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy (Borghi piรน belli d'Italia) circuit and has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Italian Touring Club. Its historic center is dominated by the Norman castle, built around the 11th century and completed in the Aragonese era with four cylindrical corner towers oriented to the cardinal points. Just below is the Franciscan convent, while beneath the village houses lies a network of Byzantine tuff caves, carved into compact sandstone.
Those caves are not just an archaeological site: the constant temperature and humidity year-round make them natural cellars for aging Caciocavallo Podolico cheese, produced with the milk of Podolica cows that graze on the surrounding plateaus. The Zungoli territory also falls within the production area of the Colline dell'Ufita PDO extra virgin olive oil, obtained from the prized Ravece cultivar.
At the time of writing, no official program for the 2026 edition has been published, so it is impossible to indicate times, stands, or musical guests. Generally speaking, village festivals in Irpinia span one or two days and include:
As this is a small-scale event, we recommend checking the date directly with the Municipality of Zungoli or the Pro Loco Zungoli APS, which manages much of the village's event calendar, before planning your trip.
The Asparagus Festival ideally opens the season of Zungoli events, which continue with the carnival, the Romantic Night of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, and especially the summer festival organized by the Pro Loco. Between August and September, this brings the Beer Festival, an evening dedicated to Irpinian cheeses, the Chiccozza Festival, and the "Borghi Forte" review to the village. Those who visit Zungoli in spring will find a quiet village, still off the mass tourism circuits, with views from the city walls that stretch all the way to the Daunia mountains.
For 2026, the Zungoli Asparagus Festival appears in regional festival calendars with only the month of May indicated, without specific days. The same sources specify that this period is derived from past editions and invite visitors to check the official program, which has not yet been published.
We will update this page as soon as the Municipality of Zungoli or the Pro Loco publishes the flyer with dates and the program. In the meantime, spring in the province of Avellino offers other festivals dedicated to the same product, a sign of how deeply rooted wild asparagus is in Irpinian cuisine.
By car (recommended): A16 Naples-Canosa motorway, exit at Grottaminarda, then take the SS90 delle Puglie towards Ariano Irpino and provincial roads to Zungoli (about 30 km from the motorway exit). From Naples, the total journey is about 130 km.
The village is not served by an active train station: you must reach Avellino or Benevento and continue by car or regional bus services. The nearest airport is Naples-Capodichino.
No official rates have been announced for the 2026 edition. In Irpinian festivals of this type, entry to the festival area is usually free, while tastings are paid for by the plate or via tickets.
The historic center of Zungoli is uphill and paved with stone: comfortable shoes are essential. At an altitude of 657 meters, May evenings remain cool, so it is best to bring a jacket. To combine with the festival: a visit to the Norman castle and the aging tuff caves, and a taste of Caciocavallo Podolico and Colline dell'Ufita PDO oil.
