A May Day celebration featuring fava beans and pecorino, homemade gnocchi, and live music in the Sabina region of Rieti
Every May 1st, the village of Casaprota, nestled in the hills of the Sabina region in the province of Rieti, celebrates Workers' Day with a day dedicated to conviviality, fine food, and music. The event, organized by the Pro Loco of Casaprota, has become a landmark May Day tradition in Lazio, bringing together the local community and visitors from neighboring towns.
The heart of the festival is the communal lunch, which begins at 1:00 PM in the town center. The menu is a tribute to local flavors: starting with an appetizer of prosciutto, cheeses, and the quintessential pairing of fava beans and pecorino, a true symbol of the rural May Day. This is followed by homemade gnocchi with tomato and basil sauce, roast pork loin with salad, and traditional desserts, all accompanied by water and wine.
After lunch, the festivities continue into the afternoon: at 4:00 PM, the SuperEgo band, an Italian pop-rock group, takes the stage in Piazza del Municipio to liven up the village with a live concert. The combination of gastronomy and music makes it a perfect day for families, groups of friends, and fans of authentic village festivals.
Located along the historic Via Salaria, a short distance from both Rome and Rieti, the Municipality of Casaprota is a small village surrounded by ancient olive groves and overlooked by the ruins of an old castle. Its slow pace and fresh air make it an ideal destination for a day trip during the May Day long weekend, perfect for discovering the most authentic side of the Sabina region and its renowned olive oil tradition.
The lunch costs 20 euros for adults and 10 euros for children, including water and wine. Reservations via the Pro Loco are recommended. In case of bad weather, the event will be postponed to a later date.
