Three days in Mattina di Caggiano dedicated to the White Artichoke, a Slow Food Presidium of the Tanagro Valley
The White Artichoke Festival was established in 2026 in Mattina di Caggiano, a small hamlet within the municipality of Caggiano, in the province of Salerno, in the hinterland of Campania. For three days, Piazzetta San Feliciano transforms into a large open-air dining room dedicated to the white artichoke, the vegetable that has defined the agricultural calendar of the lower Tanagro Valley for generations. The initiative is promoted by the Pro Loco of Caggiano, which aimed to create an event capable of showcasing the hard work of the fields through authentic home-style cooking.
The absolute star is the White Artichoke of Pertosa, recognized as a Slow Food Presidium. Its production area includes only four municipalities in the province of SalernoโAuletta, Caggiano, Pertosa, and Salvitelleโwhere the alluvial soils of the Tanagro and the availability of water produce a vegetable with a very light color, tender texture, and delicate flavor. It is a rare product, tied to limited land and manual harvesting: tasting it where it is grown, during the right season, is the very reason for the festival.
The small square is set up as a linear path of stalls: you walk, you choose, you sit down. The white artichoke is presented in various traditional preparations, accompanied by other local flavors, while folk music and conviviality fill the air around the stalls. The evenings thus become an opportunity for locals and visitors from neighboring towns to meet and mingle.
Behind the event lies a network of local stakeholders: the Pro Loco of Caggiano works alongside the municipalities of Auletta, Caggiano, Pertosa, and Salvitelle, the Province of Salerno, and the UNPLI, together with local volunteers, from the ANPAS Public Assistance to Sodalis CSV Salerno. It is a model widely found in the villages of the Campanian hinterland, where food festivals are not just a tourist attraction but a moment when a community pools its time, kitchens, and memories.
Caggiano overlooks the valley from above, with its historic center clustered around the castle and ancient churches; the hamlet of Mattina is located further down, towards the Tanagro plain. A few kilometers away are the Pertosa-Auletta Angel Caves, among the most visited in Southern Italy, and the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park is not far off. A weekend in May can thus combine fine dining, a visit to the caves, and a walk through the valley's villages.
It is a small festival, without big stages or crowds: its value lies in the opportunity to taste a product found in very few markets, prepared according to home recipes, in a square where everyone knows each other. For those looking for the lesser-known side of Campania, far from the coast and mass tourism circuits, the White Artichoke Festival is a sincere gateway to the cuisine of the Tanagro Valley.
The debut of the White Artichoke Festival enlivened the small square of Mattina di Caggiano, in the province of Salerno, for three days. The local Pro Loco set up a linear culinary trail, with the white artichoke featured in various traditional peasant dishes of the valley.
On Friday, May 15th, and Saturday, May 16th, the event took place in the evening, with stalls opening at 8:00 PM for dinner in the square; on Sunday, May 17th, the festival continued with double service, for both lunch and dinner. The tastings were accompanied by folk music and conviviality, in an inaugural edition supported by the municipalities of Auletta, Caggiano, Pertosa, and Salvitelle, the Province of Salerno, the UNPLI, and local volunteers.
Free admission for the duration of the event; tastings are paid for at the stalls.

By car, it can be reached via the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exiting at the Tanagro Valley section and continuing on local roads towards Caggiano and the Mattina hamlet. Public transport in the area is limited: a car remains the most practical means of travel. In small villages, it is advisable to arrive a little early to find parking.
Friday and Saturday, the stalls open at 8:00 PM for dinner; on Sunday, service is available for both lunch and dinner.
Free admission. Tastings and dishes are paid for directly at the food stalls.

In May, in the hills, the evenings can be cool: it is best to bring a jacket. The white artichoke is a very seasonal product with a short window, so it is best to arrive early to find all the available preparations.
