Water Festival (Gavignano)

A village festival in the heart of Lower Sabina

The Water Festival is one of the recurring events on the calendar of the Municipality of Forano, in the province of Rieti (Lazio), and takes place in the hamlet of Gavignano Sabino. The traditional date is June 7th, at the start of the Sabina summer, when days grow longer and village life returns to the outdoors, filling the streets of the historic centre and the town's communal spaces.

Not far from Gavignano lies the Fonte Meo (or Gabinia), a spring rediscovered in the late 19th century among the ruins of a Roman structure and restored in the early 20th century—a tangible sign of how much spring water matters to the memory and economy of this land.

Those arriving in Forano for the festival will also find high-quality cuisine. The area is home to PDO extra virgin olive oil from Sabina, and local tradition preserves recipes such as fallone di verdura (vegetable flatbread), nociata (a honey and walnut sweet), and Gavignano-style maccaruni, which are stars of other village festivals. A gastronomic stop is almost mandatory to complete the day.
