About Water Festival

Every year in early June, the village of Gavignano Sabino—a hamlet of the Municipality of Forano in the province of Rieti—gathers for the Water Festival, a recurring event held on June 7th. It is a simple, heartfelt village celebration that brings together residents of the historic centre overlooking the Tiber Valley for a day of socialising, folk traditions, and community life, in a region where springs and fountains have always held a deep identity value.

A village festival in the heart of Lower Sabina

The Water Festival is one of the recurring events on the calendar of the Municipality of Forano, in the province of Rieti (Lazio), and takes place in the hamlet of Gavignano Sabino. The traditional date is June 7th, at the start of the Sabina summer, when days grow longer and village life returns to the outdoors, filling the streets of the historic centre and the town's communal spaces.

This is not a large-scale tourist event, but a community festival: the type of gathering that has always marked the calendar of Sabina villages, alongside patronal feasts and food festivals. It is a moment when local families, residents returning for the occasion, and visitors from neighbouring towns meet in the same place, enjoying the intimate, familiar atmosphere that is the true hallmark of the event.

Gavignano Sabino, the village hosting the festival

Gavignano Sabino is a small historic settlement perched on a hill, offering open views over the Tiber Valley. The village preserves the northern gate of its castle and a medieval layout that tells the story of the territory: fortifications built after the year 1000, the control of the Farfa Abbey, and later the influence of the Savelli and Strozzi families, who also left their mark on the main town of Forano.

The surrounding landscape is classic Sabina: terraced olive groves, ridge roads, and scattered farmhouses. Not far from Gavignano lies the Fonte Meo (or Gabinia), a spring rediscovered in the late 19th century among the ruins of a Roman structure and restored in the early 20th century—a tangible sign of how much spring water matters to the memory and economy of this land.

What to expect

  • A day of folk celebration in the historic centre of Gavignano Sabino, with the village serving as a natural stage.
  • Moments of conviviality and meeting among residents, typical of Sabina village festivals.
  • The chance to explore the ancient village, its narrow streets, and panoramic viewpoints over the valley.
  • An ideal setting to combine your visit with other stops in the Forano area.

A detailed programme is not always released online in advance: as with many small-town festivals, the organisation relies on local channels, municipal notices, and word-of-mouth in the days immediately preceding the event.

The Forano festival calendar

The Water Festival is part of a particularly rich calendar. The municipal territory of Forano offers numerous events throughout the year: winter celebrations linked to Saint Anthony Abbot and Saint Sebastian (the patron saint, January 20th), the Passion and Procession of Good Friday, the Sabina Beer Festival in Gavignano in early July, the Pasta Festival on August 14th, and the August Festivals between August 15th and 24th, leading up to musical events in September, also in Gavignano.

Local flavours

Those arriving in Forano for the festival will also find high-quality cuisine. The area is home to PDO extra virgin olive oil from Sabina, and local tradition preserves recipes such as fallone di verdura (vegetable flatbread), nociata (a honey and walnut sweet), and Gavignano-style maccaruni, which are stars of other village festivals. A gastronomic stop is almost mandatory to complete the day.

Why visit

The Water Festival is an authentic opportunity to discover the Lower Sabina region away from the beaten track, just over an hour from Rome. Those looking for a slow travel experience, made of villages, landscapes, and living traditions, will find this an ideal starting point.
