International festival of contemporary music and arts in the monumental venues of Palermo
#wallofsounds is an international festival dedicated to contemporary music and arts held in Palermo, the capital of Sicily. Conceived, organized, and directed by Gaetano La Rosa, the festival was created with the intention of enhancing the city's monumental heritage, offering events that range from experimentation to classical contemporary, and from sound art to radical improvisation.
The most recent edition, the seventh, is titled «territorium/territori» and explores the relationship between arts, landscapes, and communities. Music, voice, visual arts, and cinema engage in a dialogue that unfolds between December and February, transforming historic spaces and cultural sites into stages for the most current sound research.
The festival is characterized by its choice of fascinating venues distributed throughout the urban fabric of Palermo:
The program alternates between concerts, vocal performances, site-specific installations, and exhibitions. Italian and international artists—from radical electric guitar to voice as a trance instrument, and from contaminated liturgical chant to electronics—engage with the historical and cultural stratification of Sicily. Alongside the performances, there are conferences and study sessions, such as the symposium dedicated to writing and cinema, which make the festival a laboratory for thought as well as for listening.
With its niche identity yet international scope, #wallofsounds represents one of the most interesting events on the experimental scene in Southern Italy. For the public of Palermo and visitors alike, it is an opportunity to discover contemporary sound art in places that tell the very history of the city, in an intimate and rigorous atmosphere far from the large numbers of mainstream festivals.
The seventh edition of #wallofsounds opened on December 6, 2025, at 8:00 PM at the Giuseppe Pitrè Sicilian Ethnographic Museum with a concert by Alessandra Novaga, one of the most radical guitarists and composers on the Italian experimental scene, in a project dedicated to Tarkovsky and Bach.
On December 20, at the Teatro Garibaldi, a double performance brought together Antonina Nowacka with «Songs of the Moon and the Flower» and Jacoba van Tonder (COBI) with «Vertical Time». On December 9 and 10, at the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, the symposium «Percorrere la terra» explored the figure of Gianni Celati.
Between January and February 2026, the festival continued with the exhibitions «Territorium» by Cécile Donato Soupama (Officine Bellotti, from January 17) and «Territori» by Corrado Sassi (Municipal Historical Archives, from January 22), as well as the performance «Bestia Sagrada» by Isabel Do Diego. A program that confirmed #wallofsounds as a laboratory for contemporary sound art in the heart of Palermo.
The festival venues are located in the historic center of Palermo and at the Cantieri Culturali alla Zisa, easily reachable on foot or by public transport. Palermo's «Falcone-Borsellino» airport is connected to the city center by train and shuttle bus. By train, you arrive at the Palermo Central Station.
Many events and exhibitions are free or by donation. For details on reservations and entry, it is recommended to contact the organization (tel. +39 328 264 3700) or follow the festival's official Facebook page.
As this is a festival spread across multiple venues and months, it is useful to check the dates, times, and locations of individual events from time to time.
