Historic engines in the Positano of Irpinia
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Vintage Car and Motorcycle Rally in Calitri is a day dedicated to historic vehicles, bringing classic cars and motorcycles to the town center in the province of Avellino, in the easternmost corner of Campania. This is not a speed race or a timed trial; it is a cultural tourism rally where the pleasure of driving on hilly roads blends with the discovery of a secluded village, just a few kilometers from the border with Basilicata.
The edition held on April 13, 2025, was organized by the Club Storico Araba Phoenix - Veicoli d'epoca of Battipaglia together with the Gruppo Alfisti Salernitani, two organizations from Salerno that have been curating a calendar of events across the region's villages for years. In Calitri, the arrival of the convoy was welcomed by local authorities. The Municipality of Calitri has also promoted other automotive events in recent years, such as the "1st Meeting between Past and Present - Vintage Cars and Abarth Club Campania," created in collaboration with the local Pro Loco: the passion for historic vehicles is now firmly established in the town.
The format follows the established tradition of Campanian rallies: crews meet early in the morning, travel in a convoy toward Irpinia, park the vehicles along the main street, and then explore the village on foot, concluding with a convivial lunch at a restaurant. The cars remain on display for most of the day, allowing even non-participants to stroll among Alfa Romeos, Fiats, vintage motorcycles, and vehicles meticulously restored by their owners.
Calitri owes its nickname to the profile of its townscape: colorful houses rise in tiers along the hillside, overlooked by the Borgo Castello, the oldest part of the town restored after the 1980 earthquake. This is also why the village works so well as a rally destination: the view is unusual for the Apennine hinterland, and the historic vehicles posed along the incline become part of the landscape, perfect for photography.
For centuries, Calitri has been a town of potters and clay workers. The Ceramics Museum, the Church of the Santissima Annunziata, and the alleys of the Borgo Castello are the stops that organizers usually include in the guided tour program. The lunch, served in a downtown restaurant, is an opportunity to taste the cuisine of Upper Irpinia: homemade pasta, meats, cheeses, and wines from a territory known for Aglianico, Fiano, and Greco.
The rally is aimed at owners of historic vehicles, both cars and motorcycles, who participate by reservation with limited spots, but it is also open to casual observers: seeing the cars lined up in town requires no registration. It is a formula that appeals to families, as it combines the charm of vintage engines with a cultural walk in a village that can be explored in a few hours and offers picturesque views at every corner.
As of the update date of this page, an official date for the 2026 edition has not yet been published: the regional calendar of Campanian rallies does not currently list any stops in Calitri, and the Municipality has not released any statements regarding it. Those wishing to participate can follow the channels of the Club Storico Araba Phoenix and the official pages of the Municipality of Calitri, where automotive events are announced a few weeks in advance, usually accompanied by a flyer with the schedule.
For 2026, an official date for the Vintage Car and Motorcycle Rally in Calitri has not yet been announced. The agendas of Campanian rallies do not currently list any stops in the town in the province of Avellino, and the Municipality has not published any statements regarding the event. This page therefore indicates a tentative placement in spring, consistent with the period of the previous edition, which was held in April.
If the event is proposed again, it is reasonable to expect the same daily structure: meeting of the crews, transfer in a convoy, display of vehicles in the historic center, guided tours, and lunch for participants. The detailed program, with times and meeting points, is usually distributed via the flyer published by the organizers a few weeks before the event.
We recommend checking the channels of the Club Storico Araba Phoenix of Battipaglia and the Municipality of Calitri before traveling: dates and registration procedures can change until the last minute.
Calitri is located in Upper Irpinia, about 70 km from Avellino. By car, take the A16 Naples-Canosa motorway (exits Grott (exits Grottaminarda or Lacedonia), continuing along the Lioni-Grottaminarda junction and the roads toward the Ofanto valley. The Calitri-Pescopagano station, on the Avellino-Rocchetta Sant'Antonio line, has very limited service: for a historic vehicle rally, the car remains the most practical solution.
Participation with your own historic vehicle is by reservation through the organizing club, with limited spots and priority given to members. In the 2025 edition, there was a 2-euro fee for the guided tour and 30 euros per person for the restaurant menu. Watching the vehicle display in town is free and open to everyone.
Wear comfortable shoes: the Borgo Castello is entirely uphill, with cobblestone alleys and stairways. In April, the temperature at this altitude can be cool, so it is best to bring a jacket. Those arriving from afar can combine the day with a stop in the nearby villages of Upper Irpinia.
